Job Description

The General Manager, Finance will play a pivotal role in shaping KenGen’s financial strategy. Reporting directly to the Managing Director & CEO, this senior executive will provide financial leadership, oversee compliance and reporting, and ensure the company’s long-term financial sustainability. The role involves not only managing the financial health of the company but also contributing to broader corporate decisions that affect growth, efficiency, and organizational performance.

This position will suit an individual who thrives in complex environments, demonstrates exceptional leadership skills, and possesses deep expertise in financial governance, corporate strategy, and operational efficiency. As a member of the senior leadership team, the successful candidate will help set the direction for KenGen while ensuring sound financial stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee strategic financial initiatives and Service Level Agreements for the finance function.
  • Establish and manage optimal funding structures to meet financing needs.
  • Supervise financial reporting and ensure compliance with all regulatory frameworks.
  • Lead corporate budgeting processes and ensure adherence to financial covenants and agreements.
  • Provide accurate cost data to guide tariff decisions and cost-reduction strategies.
  • Prepare and submit periodic departmental and government reports for informed decision-making.
  • Build and sustain strong relationships with stakeholders including regulators, partners, and shareholders.
  • Approve departmental procurement requests in line with policies and regulations.
  • Implement and monitor internal financial controls to mitigate risks.
  • Lead the development of financial policies aimed at improving operational efficiency.
  • Oversee staff motivation, performance reviews, training, and career development programs.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 15 years of progressive experience in finance management, including 5 years at senior management level within a large organization.
  • Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (Finance/Accounting), Business Administration, Economics, or equivalent.
  • Professional certifications such as CPA Part III, ACCA, CFA, or equivalent.
  • Active membership with ICPAK or a relevant professional body.
  • Completion of a leadership development course (minimum of 4 weeks) from a recognized institution.
  • Comprehensive understanding of public financial management policies and regulations.
  • Meets Chapter Six constitutional requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record of leading large finance teams within dynamic organizations.
  • Experience in working with regulators and government stakeholders.
  • Advanced knowledge of financial modeling, forecasting, and risk management.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage at board level.
