African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) is seeking a talented and experienced Accountant to join their Finance team in Nairobi, Kenya. This pivotal role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to wildlife conservation efforts while applying your financial expertise.
About the Role:
The Accountant will play a crucial role in maintaining financial accuracy and efficiency across AWF’s operations. This position requires a detail-oriented professional who can manage complex financial tasks while supporting the organization’s mission to protect Africa’s wildlife and wild lands.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Financial Management and Reporting
- – Ensure timely month-end closure in compliance with GAAP and AWF procedures
- – Prepare and maintain accurate balance sheet accounts, reconciliations, and financial statements
- – Manage organizational credit cards and expense reporting
- – Produce audit-ready documentation and support various audit processes
2. General Ledger and Accounting Operations
- – Maintain the integrity of the general ledger, including transaction review and error correction
- – Process payroll entries and allocations for multiple AWF offices
- – Manage accounts payable and receivable processes
- – Conduct monthly bank and petty cash reconciliations
3. Internal Controls and Compliance
- – Enforce and enhance internal financial controls
- – Train staff on accounting procedures and systems
- – Stay informed about relevant regulatory changes
- – Support organizational, statutory, and donor-specific audits
4. Cash Flow Management
- – Prepare cash projections and review cash requests
- – Reconcile bank balances with donor receipts
- – Process timely payments and track overdue accounts
5. Payroll Administration
- – Review and post payrolls for Kenya, expatriate staff, and other AWF offices
- – Ensure timely submission and approval of timesheets
- – Manage payroll-related tax obligations across multiple countries
6. Financial Analysis and Reporting
- – Identify potential financial risks and propose solutions
- – Prepare and distribute financial reports to key stakeholders
- – Contribute to financial system improvements and implementations
Requirements:
Education and Certifications:
- – Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field
- – Qualified Accountant and Member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK)
Experience:
- – Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience, with at least 3 years as an accountant in a medium-sized or larger organization
- – Experience in both for-profit and non-profit sectors is highly desirable
- – Familiarity with institutional and donor financial guidelines
Technical Skills:
- – Advanced knowledge of NetSuite-Oracle accounting software preferred
- – Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel
- – Understanding of GAAP and international accounting standards
Soft Skills:
- – Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- – Strong attention to detail and analytical thinking
- – Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
- – Adaptability and problem-solving skills
- – Passion for wildlife conservation is a plus
