Job Description
The Accountant is responsible for implementing accounting policies, systems, and procedures to ensure efficient and effective utilization of NACADA’s financial resources. The role supports financial reporting, budgeting, reconciliation, statutory compliance, and internal financial controls in accordance with public sector financial regulations.
As part of Kenya’s public sector accounting jobs landscape, this position contributes to accurate financial reporting, sound budget execution, and compliance with government financial management standards.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations and Accounting
- Prepare payment vouchers and staff imprests in line with approved financial procedures, policies, and regulations.
- Receive payments and issue official receipts to customers.
- Undertake cash collections, banking, daily cash balancing, and reconciliation of cash books.
- Verify accuracy of postings for payments and receipts in the cash book.
- Ensure safe custody of payment vouchers, journals, and all accountable documents.
Ledger Management and Reconciliation
- Prepare, maintain, and update creditors, debtors, and general ledger accounts.
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliation statements.
- Maintain and update the Authority’s vote book.
- Review vote book entries and conduct monthly variance analysis.
Budgeting, Reporting, and Compliance
- Assist in budget preparation and budget revision processes in line with approved work plans.
- Review monthly, quarterly, and annual management accounts and financial reports.
- Ensure statutory deductions are calculated and remitted on time.
- Support internal controls and compliance with public finance regulations.
Imprests, Petty Cash, and Staff Support
- Process staff imprests and travel advances.
- Make petty cash payments and reimbursements upon receipt of proper approvals.
- Provide financial support and guidance to internal departments as required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Business Management, or Business Administration (Accounting or Finance option) from a recognized institution.
- Passed Part III of the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registration with a recognized professional accounting body.
- Exposure to government finance jobs in Kenya or public sector accounting environments.
- Interest in long-term policy and finance jobs in Kenya.
Other Requirements
- Computer literacy and proficiency in accounting systems.
- Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya on Leadership and Integrity.
