Assistant Accountant Job Description
This position provides mid-level accounting support across the University’s departments. The Assistant Accountant is responsible for implementing financial policies, managing accounting operations, preparing reports, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. This role also contributes to budgeting, monitoring cash flows, reconciling accounts, and maintaining financial records to support effective decision-making.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement accounting policies, strategies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures.
- Coordinate management accounting and preparation of financial statements and accounts.
- Ensure implementation of financial controls and regulations.
- Authorize payments within prescribed limits.
- Coordinate preparation of financial and accounting work plans and budgets.
- Consolidate cash flow projections and ensure timely provision of accounting and financial reports.
- Maintain inventory of all bank accounts and approved signatures.
- Interpret financial policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Ensure invoicing and accounting of University services.
- Maintain and update accounting records; reconcile creditors and debtors’ accounts.
- Validate monthly bank reconciliation statements.
- Ensure all payments are within approved University budgetary provisions.
- Monitor and review inventory transactions.
- Update vote heads for various departments and prepare budget estimates.
- Develop departmental work plans and participate in quality management and performance contracting processes.
- Maintain asset register.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum six (6) years’ cumulative relevant work experience, including three (3) years at Assistant Accountant Grade 9 or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Economics, Business Administration, Business Management, or equivalent from a recognized and accredited institution.
- Certificate in Part II of CPA, Part II of ACCA, or equivalent qualification from a recognized and accredited institution.
- Registered with a relevant professional body (where applicable).
- Proficiency in relevant computer applications.
