Assistant Claims Officer Job Description
The Assistant Claims Officer is responsible for processing medical claims accurately and efficiently. The role involves verifying claim submissions, assessing reimbursement policies, performing reconciliation, and supporting negotiations for payments. The officer also contributes to client retention strategies, ensuring clients receive optimal service within company and policy guidelines.
This position requires collaboration with underwriters, brokers, agents, and internal teams such as sales, marketing, and actuarial departments. The officer monitors market trends, competitor activity, and regulatory changes to support informed decision-making, client retention, and strategic alignment with business goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Set parameters for each admission including claim reserve, initial authorized cost, and duration.
- Interact with clients and service providers to ensure care is delivered within policy guidelines.
- Review medical reports and claims for compliance and accuracy.
- Coordinate with underwriters on scope of cover and pricing terms.
- Discourage polypharmacy and encourage generic substitution to manage pharmaceutical costs.
- Analyze proposed risks and determine acceptability and rates.
- Manage broker, agent, and intermediary relationships effectively.
- Monitor market trends, competitor activities, and regulatory changes.
- Align retention strategies with business goals and proactively manage policy renewals.
- Negotiate renewal terms and conditions to retain clients.
- Prepare periodic management reports on medical claims performance.
- Ensure timely claims processing in accordance with delegated authority.
Required Qualifications
- Diploma/Degree in Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, or Bachelor’s degree (insurance option preferred).
- Progress in professional insurance qualifications (ACII, FLMI, or IIK).
- 1–3 years of experience in health or medical claims.
- Proven experience in client relationship management and retention.
- Strong knowledge of insurance products and regulatory requirements.
- Technical proficiency in claims processing and reporting systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in sales, marketing, or client retention strategies within the insurance industry.
- Knowledge of policy renewals, risk assessment, and medical claims analysis.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
