Internship Program Overview
This one-year internship is designed to immerse a graduate in the full spectrum of corporate communications and public relations within a public utility. Working under the guidance of the Corporate Communication Officer, the intern will gain practical experience in crafting compelling narratives, managing stakeholder relations, and executing outreach strategies that highlight the importance of water conservation and sustainable practices. This program is an ideal journalism or public relations graduate program for those wanting to specialize in environmental advocacy and utility sector communication.
Duties and Responsibilities
As the Communication and Public Relations Intern, you will be actively involved in the following key areas:
- Assist in creating educational, engaging, and accurate content about water conservation, safety, sustainability, and public health for various audiences.
- Draft press releases, official community updates, newsletter articles, and internal communications to keep stakeholders informed.
- Support the management of the company’s social media platforms, including content creation, scheduling, community interaction, and basic performance analytics.
- Monitor traditional and digital media for coverage related to ELDOWAS, the water sector, and environmental issues, tracking public sentiment and emerging news.
- Help coordinate and execute community outreach programs, educational school visits, public forums, and corporate events.
- Maintain and update media contact lists, stakeholder databases, and assist with outreach to journalists, local leaders, and partner organizations.
- Ensure all communication materials are consistent with the company’s brand, mission, and values of providing safe, reliable water services.
Minimum Requirements and Eligibility
This internship is tailored for fresh graduates passionate about communication. Eligible candidates for this PR and communications trainee position must meet all criteria:
- Must be an unemployed Kenyan graduate from a recognized training institution.
- Must have completed a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Public Administration, or a closely related field within the last three (3) years.
- Must not have prior formal work experience related to communications or public relations since graduation.
- Must not have retired or formally exited from prior employment.
- Must not have previously benefited from a similar internship or attachment program.
- Possess strong written and verbal communication, editing, and storytelling skills.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in environmental issues, public utilities, water management, or sustainability.
- Be a creative thinker with the ability to translate technical or complex information into clear, engaging, and accessible content.
- Have practical familiarity with major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X/Twitter, TikTok) for professional use.
- Show the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, managing multiple projects in a dynamic environment.
