Job Description
The Deputy University Librarian, Grade AD 14, will report directly to the University Librarian and provide strategic, technical, and administrative leadership in the management of library and information services. This role supports the delivery of modern, user-centered library services aligned with global best practices in higher education.
The position is suited for candidates seeking senior university administrative and academic support careers, with responsibilities spanning policy implementation, staff supervision, systems management, and innovation in library and information services.
Key Responsibilities
- Standardizing cataloguing, classification, indexing, and dissemination of information resources.
- Coordinating a unified list of periodicals across the University’s information centres and libraries.
- Managing the establishment and operations of Library Information Centres within the institution.
- Supervising, guiding, mentoring, and counseling library staff.
- Monitoring publishing trends to advise on procurement of up-to-date library information materials.
- Communicating and interpreting library policies and procedures to users.
- Coordinating the weeding, discarding, and replacement of outdated library materials.
- Facilitating cataloguing of library materials in accordance with international standards.
- Providing input into the development and review of the library technical services manual.
- Preparing library work plans and quarterly performance reports.
- Managing and updating the library website and digital access platforms.
- Monitoring and evaluating the Library Management System.
- Ensuring all library service points function effectively and efficiently.
- Promoting innovation and keeping abreast of emerging technologies in library and information science.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Library Studies, Library Science, Information Science, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Library Studies, Library Science, Information Science, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- At least three (3) years of service as a Senior Librarian, Grade 13, or in a comparable position.
- Publication of a minimum of two (2) articles in peer-reviewed journals.
- Certificate in computer applications from a recognized institution.
- Demonstrated professional, managerial, and administrative competence.
- Registration with the relevant professional body.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certificate in Senior Management Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks.
- PhD degree in Library Science, Information Science, or a related field.
- Experience managing digital libraries and academic information systems.
- Exposure to library automation, institutional repositories, and research support services.
