Laboratory Technologist – Role Overview
The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for ensuring accurate, timely, and reliable laboratory results across KPA clinics. This role involves performing pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory processes, maintaining specimen integrity, supervising junior staff, and ensuring compliance with all quality standards. Key Responsibilities
- Ensure proper handling and confidentiality of laboratory records in compliance with legal requirements.
- Execute pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical processes of laboratory investigations and document results accurately on SAP or hard copy.
- Supervise direct reports and provide on-the-job training for junior laboratory staff.
- Participate in Internal Quality Control (IQC) and External Quality Control (EQC) programs.
- Sterilize glassware, equipment, specimen bottles, and other apparatus for microbiological use.
- Prepare routine laboratory reagents and culture media for the isolation of organisms.
- Ensure specimens are stored in appropriate containers and under correct conditions.
- Enforce occupational health, safety, and environmental policies consistently in the laboratory.
- Participate in the proper disposal of laboratory waste and chemicals as per NEMA and MSD guidelines.
Required Qualifications
- KCSE certificate or its equivalent.
- Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences from a recognized institution.
- Registered member of the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board.
- ICT skills for laboratory data management and reporting.
- Demonstrated professional competency, administrative capabilities, and initiative in laboratory management.
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience as Clinical Laboratory Technologist II in a reputable organization.
- Compliance with Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya on ethics and integrity.
- Uphold Chapter 4 of the Constitution of Kenya and CAP 253A of 1999 – KMLTT Act.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with quality control systems, including IQC and EQC processes.
- Familiarity with microbiological procedures, specimen handling, and reagent preparation.
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills to train junior laboratory staff.
- Knowledge of SAP or other laboratory information systems for accurate documentation and reporting.
