Job Description
The Lead Internal Auditor supports the Head of Internal Audit in fulfilling the responsibilities outlined in Article 50 of the ICRC’s Internal Regulations. This position plays a vital role in evaluating and strengthening ICRC’s governance, risk management, and control frameworks across headquarters and field delegations. The role involves conducting comprehensive audit engagements, ensuring compliance with laws and policies, and promoting effective use of resources to enhance institutional performance.
The incumbent will work both independently and collaboratively with small teams, often coordinating audit assignments in complex environments. The position requires analytical acumen, excellent communication, and the ability to translate audit findings into actionable recommendations that drive organizational improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct audit engagements as outlined in the approved Annual Audit Plan, including delegation and thematic audits.
- Assess the effectiveness of ICRC’s governance, risk management, and internal control systems.
- Evaluate compliance with internal regulations, strategies, and operational procedures.
- Analyze resource utilization to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and adequacy of protection measures.
- Develop and deliver detailed audit reports with clear findings and actionable recommendations.
- Contribute to strategic planning and continuous improvement within the Internal Audit function.
- Ensure adherence to evolving audit standards, tools, and best practices.
- Lead or coordinate small audit teams (up to three members) during assignments in complex environments.
- Support data-driven auditing through process automation and analytical tools to improve efficiency.
- Undertake regular field missions, spending up to three consecutive weeks per audit assignment.
- Provide expertise in specialized areas such as risk management, digital transformation, or cybersecurity.
- Contribute to institutional learning by sharing insights on humanitarian trends and operational contexts.
Required Qualifications
- University degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 12–15 years of professional experience in internal or external auditing.
- Strong knowledge of governance, risk management, and internal control frameworks.
- Professional certification such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), or Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) is highly desirable.
- Excellent command of English; proficiency in another ICRC working language (French, Spanish, Arabic, or Russian) is an asset.
- Strong analytical, communication, and report-writing skills.
- Ability to travel internationally and adapt to diverse, multicultural environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in humanitarian organizations, international NGOs, or intergovernmental agencies.
- Knowledge of digital transformation, cybersecurity, or project management practices.
- Proficiency with data analytics and audit management systems.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing cross-functional audit teams.
