Job Description
The Manager, Sustainability will lead the development and implementation of KenGen’s sustainability strategies. Reporting to the General Manager, Commercial Services, this role will focus on ensuring compliance with environmental and social safeguards, implementing international standards, and driving sustainability initiatives that align with the company’s long-term vision.
The role requires strong leadership, technical expertise in environmental and social governance (ESG), and the ability to build partnerships with communities, regulators, and global stakeholders. This is an opportunity to shape how KenGen balances energy growth with environmental protection and social responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement sustainability and environmental management policies aligned with KenGen’s strategic objectives.
- Ensure compliance with national environmental laws, international standards, and industry best practices.
- Oversee Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) and ensure timely, accurate reporting.
- Lead the design, implementation, and monitoring of environmental management programs across projects.
- Ensure statutory environmental audits are conducted and that recommendations are implemented effectively.
- Coordinate the development, management, and trading of carbon assets in line with global climate protocols.
- Promote catchment conservation through collaborative partnerships and community engagement initiatives.
- Advance KenGen’s commitment to the United Nations Global Compact principles and report on sustainability progress.
- Lead the preparation and execution of Resettlement Action Plans for affected communities.
- Manage divisional staff, budgets, and resources to ensure efficient delivery of sustainability goals.
- Establish and oversee project stakeholder committees to enhance engagement and accountability.
- Ensure compliance with financiers’ environmental and social safeguard requirements for all projects.
- Assess new and ongoing projects for environmental and social feasibility.
- Foster a culture of environmental and social sustainability within the organization.
Required Qualifications
- At least twelve (12) years of relevant professional experience, with a minimum of four (4) years at middle management level in a large organization or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline.
- Master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
- Professional qualifications and active membership in recognized institutions, including the Environmental Institute of Kenya.
- Completion of a leadership development course lasting at least four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
- Deep knowledge of environmental and social governance standards, policies, and compliance frameworks.
- Must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in leading sustainability initiatives within the energy or infrastructure sectors.
- Demonstrated expertise in carbon asset management and climate policy compliance.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and community relations skills.
- Proven ability to manage large-scale sustainability projects and deliver measurable impact.
