NRT is a membership organization owned and led by 45 community conservancies in Northern and Coastal Kenya and Uganda, covering 11% of Kenya’s land area. Their mission is to develop community conservancies, enhance people’s lives, build peace, and conserve the natural environment.

Job Overview:

NRT is seeking a dynamic and experienced Communications Director to join their Fundraising and Partnerships Department. This strategic role will be responsible for leading and executing NRT’s communications programs, advancing the organization’s brand, and increasing visibility among external partners, including communities, government stakeholders, and donors.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Communications Leadership:

  • – Develop and implement NRT’s communications strategy in alignment with the 2024-2028 Strategic Plan and 2050 Vision
  • – Shape organizational communications priorities to improve branding, messaging, and public positioning
  • – Lead all aspects of communication and public relations management within NRT

2. Content Creation and Management:

  • – Oversee a team of content creators to produce high-quality communications and marketing materials
  • – Manage the development of annual reports, impact reports, quarterly reports, donor materials, and outreach content
  • – Coordinate creation of engaging social media stories, reels, and posts

3. Media and Public Relations:

  • – Build and maintain relationships with journalists, media outlets, and influencers
  • – Handle media inquiries and manage press releases, news conferences, and other media events
  • – Develop and execute crisis communication plans when necessary

4. Digital Communications:

  • – Manage NRT’s website and social media channels
  • – Produce regular and insightful blogs to engage stakeholders
  • – Implement digital marketing strategies to increase online presence

5. Campaign and Event Management:

  • – Conceive and lead groundbreaking communications and advocacy campaigns
  • – Oversee the promotion and execution of events to maximize visibility and engagement

6. Internal Communications:

  • – Develop and maintain internal communication platforms (e.g., Microsoft Teams)
  • – Ensure effective information sharing within the organization
  • – Create newsletters, intranet updates, and internal announcements to keep staff informed and engaged

7. Partnership Support:

  • – Execute external communications for existing and prospective partners
  • – Collaborate with fundraising and program teams to develop engagement strategies

8. Reporting and Analysis:

  • – Prepare progress reports on communications initiatives
  • – Track and analyze NRT’s media presence and coverage quality
  • – Manage the communications budget and ensure efficient resource allocation

Requirements:

Education:

  • – Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • – Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Corporate Communication, Mass Communication, Journalism, or related field from a recognized university in Kenya

Experience:

  • – Minimum 10 years of practical communications management experience across a broad geography
  • – Strong background in conservation-related communications
  • – Experience working with government, donors, and NGOs in the development and conservation sectors
  • – Proven track record in online marketing and communication strategy development
  • – Fluency in social media platforms and ability to drive engagement

Skills and Competencies:

  • – Excellent writing and communication skills in English and Swahili (foreign language is an advantage)
  • – Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • – Proficiency in budgeting and financial management
  • – Ability to work independently and in challenging environments
  • – Experience in crisis communication and reputation management
  • – Knowledge of conservancy operations, peace and security issues, human-wildlife co-existence, and carbon projects
  • – Demonstrated cultural sensitivity and ability to work with diverse teams
