Senior Driver Job Description

The Senior Driver is responsible for operating and maintaining official vehicles, ensuring the safety of passengers and goods, and adhering to traffic regulations and organizational policies. This role reports directly to the Office Administrator I and provides professional transport support for the institution’s operational needs.

Candidates in this role are expected to mentor junior drivers, conduct routine vehicle checks, and ensure compliance with vehicle management standards. The position offers a clear career path for advancing in public sector driver positions and administrative transport services in Nairobi.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development and implementation of transport guidelines and standard operating procedures.
  • Drive official vehicles as authorized and ensure passenger safety.
  • Adhere strictly to traffic laws, institutional policies, and government regulations.
  • Perform routine vehicle checks including oil, cooling, brakes, electrical systems, and tyre pressure.
  • Plan transportation routes based on road and traffic conditions.
  • Conduct regular washing, cleaning, and maintenance of vehicles.
  • Schedule and coordinate vehicle servicing with relevant authorities.
  • Detect and report vehicle malfunctions promptly.
  • Ensure authorization of work tickets and proper documentation of transport activities.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior drivers, promoting safe driving practices.
  • Report any incidents or accidents immediately to the police and management.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of nine (9) years’ cumulative work experience, including three (3) years at Driver I grade or equivalent.
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Mean Grade D (Plain) or equivalent qualification.
  • Valid driving license covering required vehicle classes, free from endorsements.
  • Passed the Suitability Test for Drivers Grade I.
  • First-Aid Certificate of at least one (1) week from recognized institutions (St. John Ambulance or KIHBT).
  • Defensive Driving Certificate from AA Kenya or equivalent.
  • Customer Service Training Certificate from KIHBT or equivalent.
  • Valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Kenya Police.
  • Proficiency in computer applications relevant to transport and reporting duties.
  • Demonstrated merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with staff and the public.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team while meeting deadlines.
  • Attention to detail and responsibility for the safety of passengers and goods.
