Senior Officer – Early Arrears Management – Role Overview

The Senior Officer – Early Arrears Management is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and recovering early arrears (1-90 days past due) across the bank’s portfolio. This role ensures that all delinquent accounts are proactively managed, customer repayment arrangements are enforced, and recovery strategies comply with Family Bank’s policies and Central Bank of Kenya regulations. The arrears management role at Family Bank contributes directly to improved portfolio quality, reduced non-performing loans, and enhanced customer engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify, review, and continuously improve processes and procedures within the regional portfolio for early arrears management.
  • Perform collection functions for early arrears, including demand and enforcement of repayment from delinquent accounts.
  • Negotiate repayment arrangements with defaulting customers and monitor adherence to agreed plans.
  • Conduct client and business visits for accounts with struggling loan facilities, ensuring proactive recovery.
  • Review daily system/credit monitoring reports, identify irregularities, and implement corrective actions in line with credit policies.
  • Facilitate issuance of demand letters, statutory notices, and repossession instructions where necessary.
  • Liaise with auctioneers for effective realization of securities and ensure satisfactory completion of the auctioning process.
  • Collaborate with the Legal Department on recovery litigations and credit disputes requiring legal interpretation.
  • Maintain effective relationships with internal and external customers, ensuring clear and professional communication.
  • Prepare, submit, and present detailed reports with actionable business recommendations to management.
  • Supervise, coach, and train staff in early arrears management, promoting continuous development and high-performance standards.
  • Monitor and evaluate individual and regional team performance, directing maximum effort toward achieving departmental objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, bank policies, and audit standards for credit control.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement innovative initiatives to enhance recovery efficiency.
  • Perform any other official duties as assigned by management.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Accounts, or a related field.
  • Professional credit or debt recovery qualifications are advantageous.
  • Minimum of four (4) years practical experience in collections, credit recovery, or related banking functions.
  • Experience in banking with a legal background is a plus.
  • Sound knowledge of Family Bank’s policies, procedures, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, internet, and email applications.
  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • High integrity, reliability, and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, support, and develop talent within the Debt Recovery Unit.
  • Experience in implementing process improvements and system enhancements in credit recovery operations.
  • Proven track record in achieving targets for early arrears collections and loan recoveries.
