Role Overview

The Technician position is an entry-grade role where individuals support senior technicians in executing maintenance, repairs, inspections, reporting, and operational tasks. Technicians may be deployed into any of KPA’s core functional areas depending on their academic specialization and technical competency. Functional Areas and Responsibilities

Mechanical

  • Assist Senior Technicians in implementing maintenance programs for infrastructure, equipment, and marine crafts.
  • Support emergency repair activities as assigned.
  • Prepare and submit routine reports on executed maintenance tasks.
  • Inspect tools, monitor condition, and maintain inventory for upcoming jobs.

Electrical

  • Assist Senior Technicians in inspecting electrical installations, marine craft systems, and electrical equipment.
  • Support preventive maintenance programs to ensure proper scheduling and documentation.
  • Assist in power distribution operations across KPA premises, estates, and substations.
  • Support emergency repairs for electrical faults in equipment or marine crafts.
  • Ensure safe handling of electrical tools and accessories.

Civil

  • Assist in preparing technical specifications for construction materials.
  • Support building, civil engineering, and permanent way works as needed.
  • Assist in inspecting and verifying the quality of civil engineering materials.

Projects

  • Collect technical data required for design and engineering projects.
  • Prepare daily site records and weekly progress reports.
  • Ensure safety of site equipment and availability of necessary accessories for project activities.

Instrumentation & Control (I&C)

  • Support repairs of instrumentation and control equipment in field and workshop environments.
  • Assist in scheduled maintenance activities and operational checks.
  • Prepare regular reports detailing completed maintenance tasks.

Shift Operations

  • Implement KPA Electrical, Mechanical, and Ferry Shift Cycle arrangements.
  • Record all electrical faults in SAP accurately.
  • Prepare timely daily breakdown and fault occurrence reports.
  • Monitor power supply stability across operational areas.
  • Allocate duties and supervise shift teams.
  • Liaise with Station Controllers to maintain safe running of the Power System.
  • Communicate operational matters with KPLC when required.
  • Monitor and evaluate the performance of shift personnel against set performance targets.
  • Man vessels during operational hours and ensure compliance with marine safety guidelines.

Person Specifications

  • KCSE Certificate or its equivalent.
  • Diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Civil, Permanent Way, Building & Construction, Electrical, Electronics, or Marine Engineering, or an equivalent recognized qualification.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Fulfillment of Chapter Six requirements of the Constitution of Kenya.
