The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is seeking an intern to join their Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) based in Nairobi, Kenya. This six-month, full-time unpaid internship offers an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in international maritime security and law enforcement to gain valuable experience with the United Nations.

About the Global Maritime Crime Programme

Based at the Regional Office for Eastern Africa (ROEA) in Nairobi, the Regional & Construction team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme plays a crucial role in strengthening maritime law enforcement across the Indian Ocean West region. The team coordinates regional training sessions at the Seychelles Centre of Excellence for Maritime Law Enforcement officers and oversees infrastructure projects to equip regional agencies with adequate facilities to counter maritime crimes.

The programme has extensive experience supporting states in the Indian Ocean West region, with a programming presence in Seychelles, Mauritius, Mozambique, and South Africa.

Key UN Internship Responsibilities

Working under the direct supervision of the Professional staff of the Regional & Construction team, the intern will:

  • – Contribute to the preparation of background documents, presentations, summaries, talking points, and speeches
  • – Assist in organizing technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events, and conferences
  • – Attend and take detailed notes at meetings
  • – Assist with translating documents and materials
  • – Perform other tasks as necessary

Requirements

Education

  • – Completion of Secondary School Education is required
  • – Must be enrolled in or have recently completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); OR
  • – Be enrolled in or have recently completed the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent); OR
  • – Have graduated with a university degree

Skills

  • – Computer literacy in standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams
  • – Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter
  • – Ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs
  • – Willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Language

  • – Fluency in spoken and written English is required
  • – Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage
