The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) is re-advertising for forty (40) Apron Controller Trainee positions. Job Purpose

The Apron Controller Trainee will play a critical role in managing the safe and organized movement of aircraft on the apron. This includes regulating aircraft ground movements, guiding aircraft into and out of parking bays, operating key ground equipment, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The successful candidate will undergo intensive on-the-job training designed to prepare them for long-term deployment in Kenya’s busy airports.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Aircraft and Apron Movement

  • Marshalling aircraft into and out of parking bays to support smooth arrival and departure processes.
  • Guiding aircraft to allocated bays using radio telephony in line with ICAO standards.
  • Monitoring and directing aircraft ground movements for safety and efficiency.

Safety and Inspection

  • Inspecting aprons for Foreign Object Debris (FOD) to ensure the safety of aircraft, passengers, and crew.
  • Reporting oil spills and other hazards and ensuring apron cleanliness at all times.
  • Enforcing airside safety regulations according to IATA, ICAO, and KAA standards.

Equipment Operation

  • Operating the Visual Docking Guidance System (VDGS).
  • Driving the “Follow Me” car to assist aircraft to their designated bays.
  • Docking and retracting passenger boarding bridges for safe embarking/disembarking.

Data Entry and Reporting

  • Uploading air traffic movement into the Airport Operations Database (AODB).
  • Completing the Daily Aircraft Movement Records (DAMR).
  • Documenting aircraft records for billing, parking, and bridge usage charges.

Operational Support

  • Ensuring safe refueling of aircraft in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Collecting and recording data on aircraft handled to support management decisions.
  • Reporting apron incidents and accidents for prompt resolution.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • KCSE Grade C (Plain) minimum; C- (Minus) accepted for applicants from marginalized areas or persons with disabilities.
  • Certificate in Airport Operations – an added advantage.
  • Prior experience in Ground Flight Safety – an added advantage.
  • Basic computer literacy is mandatory.
  • Age Limit: Not more than 26 years (born on or after 1st Jan 1999), or 28 years (born on or after 1st Jan 1997) for marginalized applicants.

Terms of Engagement

The selected trainees will be hired on a one-year contract for on-the-job training. Upon successful completion, permanent and pensionable appointments may be offered based on performance outcomes.
