Artisan – Role Overview
The Artisan position at Kenya Ports Authority is designed for candidates beginning their technical careers and seeking hands-on experience across multiple functional areas. The role involves assisting Senior Artisans with planned maintenance, equipment servicing, repair tasks, safety checks, record-keeping, tool handling, and housekeeping within assigned units. Artisans may be deployed in mechanical, electrical, painting, carpentry & joinery, aluminium work, or masonry depending on departmental needs.
This position supports day-to-day technical operations, contributes to infrastructure maintenance, and ensures safe and efficient running of port equipment, marine vessels, and civil engineering assets. It is ideal for individuals seeking an entry-level technical job with structured mentorship, practical fieldwork, and exposure to multidisciplinary engineering environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Senior Artisans in conducting daily safety checks on equipment across assigned technical areas.
- Support planned and breakdown maintenance activities for mechanical, electrical, carpentry, masonry, and painting work.
- Record equipment maintenance data, production data, and infrastructure status reports as guided by Senior Artisans.
- Perform routine housekeeping, cleaning of tools, equipment, and work areas to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Carry, trace, and sort tools, paints, materials, and equipment from stores to designated working areas.
- Participate in welding, fabrication, and component production under the supervision of Senior Mechanical Artisans.
- Assist in preparing surfaces, selecting tools, and undertaking painting tasks related to marine vessels and port infrastructure.
- Support timber and aluminium preparation, joinery, carpentry work, and planned maintenance activities.
- Assist in selecting masonry tools, preparing materials, and supporting civil works maintenance tasks.
- Conduct daily checks for maintenance defects in marine vessels, buildings, civil engineering structures, and equipment.
Required Qualifications
- KCSE certificate or its equivalent.
- Government Trade Test III or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Proficiency in computer applications applicable to technical and maintenance operations.
- Possession of a Seafarer proficiency certificate or Discharge Book where applicable.
- Must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
- Must be 30 years of age or below.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience gained through attachments, internships, or volunteer technical programs.
- Basic understanding of mechanical, electrical, masonry, painting, or carpentry tools and techniques.
- Familiarity with safety procedures in industrial or marine environments.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills in a technical setting.
