Job Purpose
The Assistant Librarian will be responsible for the general maintenance and operation of the University College Library under the guidance of senior officers. This position is ideal for candidates seeking academic librarian positions, library information officer roles, and library administration careers in Kenya. The officer will manage library resources, support user education, and contribute to the efficient delivery of library services.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure smooth and efficient running of library services and maintain the library database.
- Index and abstract journal articles for easy retrieval and research support.
- Prepare work plans for junior staff and coordinate their daily activities.
- Prepare departmental quarterly reports and provide insights on library operations.
- Supervise charging and discharging of library materials to users.
- Coordinate reference and referral services for library patrons, ensuring timely support.
- Distribute publishers’ catalogues to faculty deans and heads of departments.
- Catalog and classify newly acquired library resources.
- Verify bibliographic details of library materials and maintain accurate records.
- Operate and maintain library management systems, ensuring accurate stock editing.
- Teach library skills and provide user education to students, staff, and faculty.
- Offer ICT services across various user categories, supporting digital literacy and access.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Master’s Degree in Library Studies, Library Science, Information Science, or equivalent from a recognized and accredited institution.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Library Studies, Library Science, Information Science, or equivalent.
- Minimum cumulative service period of six (6) years in relevant roles, with at least three (3) years at Senior Library Assistant Grade C/D or equivalent.
- Registration with a recognized professional library body.
- Demonstrated merit and ability in previous work performance and results.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including library management software and office productivity tools.
Terms of Service
Employment for this position will be on permanent and pensionable terms. The appointed candidate will be remunerated according to the Inter Public University Councils Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement approved salary rates.
