About the Role

The Brand Specialist will report directly to the Chapter Leads – Brand Strategy and Marketing Communications. This pivotal position is charged with developing and executing powerful brand strategies that increase awareness, spark engagement, and position the Safaricom and M-PESA brands as category leaders across all communication platforms.

Acting as the principal brand storyteller and guardian, the successful candidate will play a critical role in shaping brand perception through a digital-first, insight-led approach. This position falls within the Brand Center of Excellence (COE) and will require the candidate to maintain consistency in brand messaging while also ensuring regular updates and audits of branding guidelines and assets.

Key Responsibilities

Brand Building and Strategy Execution

  • Define and refine brand positioning to stand out in the market and resonate with target audiences.
  • Develop compelling brand narratives that align with Safaricom’s strategic goals and appeal to customers.
  • Leverage data insights, customer behavior patterns, and competitive analysis to create impactful branding campaigns.
  • Apply insights from other industries and business units to develop breakthrough strategies that elevate brand visibility and reputation.

Integrated Campaign Management

  • Plan, execute, and evaluate the effectiveness of integrated brand campaigns across digital, traditional, and experiential channels.
  • Manage multiple marketing campaigns simultaneously, ensuring consistency in message and brand voice.
  • Set high standards for internal and agency teams to foster innovative, bold, and results-driven communication approaches.
  • Utilize agile project management techniques to form high-performing, cross-functional teams for growth-focused execution.

Brand Governance and Communication Development

  • Act as the brand custodian by maintaining branding standards and conducting frequent audits and updates.
  • Develop “One Brief” communications for agencies with clear goals, creative direction, and alignment to overall business strategy.
  • Collaborate with PR, legal, product, and corporate communications teams to ensure cohesive brand storytelling across all touchpoints.

Digital Transformation and Marketing Technology

  • Champion digital marketing innovation, including the use of Martech tools, AI, data analytics, and automation to improve efficiency and campaign performance.
  • Drive the digital agenda by identifying new opportunities for digitization in marketing strategy.

Team Leadership and Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams including consumer, enterprise, financial services, channel partners, and sustainability leads.
  • Inspire teams to take ownership, collaborate, and embrace a growth mindset aligned with the Safaricom spirit.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and high performance within internal and agency teams.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in brand management or related roles.
  • At least 2 years of experience in senior roles such as Brand Manager, Category Marketing Lead, or Innovation Manager.
  • Experience working in a communication agency, strategic consultancy, or with large cross-functional teams is highly desirable.
  • Proven ability to manage brand campaign budgets, agency partnerships, and multiple project timelines efficiently.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing trends, marketing technology, AI/ML in marketing, and campaign analytics.
