Clinical Officer – Role Overview

This Clinical Officer role at Equity Afya is responsible for providing comprehensive patient care through accurate diagnosis, treatment, and management of common medical and surgical conditions. The position requires a strong commitment to patient safety, preventive healthcare, and adherence to established clinical guidelines.

The Clinical Officer will be involved in outpatient consultations, basic emergency care, chronic disease management, and participation in public health and preventive care initiatives. This role is well-suited for clinicians with experience in busy healthcare facilities who are passionate about delivering high-quality care while working within regulated and ethical clinical frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive patient assessment, diagnosis, and treatment in line with approved clinical guidelines.
  • Manage common medical and surgical conditions across outpatient and emergency care settings.
  • Deliver preventive healthcare services, including health education, screening, and early disease detection.
  • Participate in the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes, and asthma.
  • Provide basic emergency and life-saving care in line with BLS and ACLS protocols.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of patient records using Health Management Information Systems (HMIS).
  • Refer patients appropriately and collaborate with other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care.
  • Participate in public health initiatives, outreach programs, and health promotion activities.
  • Adhere strictly to ethical, legal, and regulatory standards governing clinical practice.
  • Support quality improvement initiatives and clinical audits within the facility.

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery.
  • Registered with the Clinical Officers Council and MUST possess a valid practicing license.
  • At least one (1) year post-internship experience in a public or private hospital.
  • Over one (1) year working experience in a busy health facility.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in non-communicable diseases (NCD) management.
  • Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Strong clinical judgment, professionalism, and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in outpatient or emergency care settings.
  • Experience using digital health systems and electronic medical records.
  • Strong communication and patient counseling skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
