Driver / Expeditor Job Description
The Driver / Expeditor role supports the Nairobi Regional Diplomatic Courier Hub by transporting diplomatic couriers and classified diplomatic pouches to and from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and other locations as required. The position ensures uninterrupted courier operations by coordinating logistics, facilitating airport processes, and maintaining mission vehicles.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Drive diplomatic couriers and transport classified diplomatic bags between the airport and embassy facilities.
- Escort couriers and diplomatic pouches between aircraft and embassy locations.
- Act as an expeditor by keeping couriers informed of airport, airline, or visa-related issues in Nairobi.
- Provide direct assistance to diplomatic couriers when moving classified pouches through Nairobi International Airport.
- Maintain professional working relationships with airline security authorities and airport officials to ensure uninterrupted courier operations.
- Assist in reformulating flight plans and booking alternative travel arrangements when courier trips are disrupted.
- Coordinate payment and logistics for the transport of diplomatic pouches when required.
- Demonstrate familiarity with cargo capacity limitations of different aircraft.
- Obtain required customs clearances for diplomatic cargo arriving at Nairobi International Airport.
- Ensure correct documentation is available when crossing international borders, including vehicle paperwork and personal passport.
- Perform regular maintenance and ensure roadworthiness of Nairobi Regional Diplomatic Courier Hub vehicles.
- Carry out additional duties as assigned by the agency in support of mission operations.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school education is required, with documentation to be provided.
- Valid Kenyan driver’s license for passenger vehicles, vans, and large commercial trucks.
- Valid passport.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.
- Willingness to undergo background investigation and pre-employment medical examination.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of three years total experience.
- At least three years of experience driving standard vehicles and commercial trucks.
- At least two years of clerical, airport cargo, shipping, or transportation experience included within the three years.
Language Requirements
- English proficiency at Level 3 (speaking, reading, writing).
- Kiswahili proficiency at Level 3 (speaking, reading, writing).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- General knowledge of visa requirements for courier travel within East Africa.
- Understanding of airline cargo shipping procedures, customs processes, and Kenyan law.
- Ability to use computer applications including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills when dealing with airline agents and airport officials.
- Ability to manage difficult situations and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Physical ability to perform moderately strenuous work, including lifting loads of up to 50 pounds and heavier loads using mechanical equipment.
