Job Description

The Driver II position is a critical operational role within the Social Health Authority, responsible for providing safe, reliable, and efficient transport services to support the Authority’s daily operations. The role involves ensuring that vehicles are properly maintained, operated safely, and comply with all transport and traffic laws.

This is a government driver job opportunity in Kenya that offers job stability, pension benefits, and opportunities for professional growth. The successful candidate will operate official vehicles, transport staff and materials, and contribute to the effective mobility and logistical efficiency of the Authority.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drive official vehicle(s) as authorized by the Authority.
  • Ensure the safety of passengers, goods, and the vehicle while on and off the road.
  • Maintain a clean and roadworthy vehicle at all times and ensure timely servicing as per fleet policy.
  • Perform routine vehicle checks to identify maintenance needs and report any mechanical issues promptly.
  • Keep accurate vehicle mileage logs and maintain work tickets for all trips undertaken.
  • Ensure proper fueling, timely insurance renewal, and compliance with fleet management policies.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws and regulations, as well as SHA transport and safety policies.
  • Immediately report any road incidents, injuries, or damages involving the vehicle, passengers, or third parties in line with Authority procedures.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is equipped with essential tools including a toolbox, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, and spotlight.

Required Qualifications

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean Grade D plain or its equivalent qualification.
  • Valid BCE driving license free from current endorsements.
  • Passed Occupational Trade Test Grade III for Drivers.
  • Defensive Driving Certificate from the Automobile Association (AA) of Kenya or an equivalent institution.
  • Refresher Course for Drivers (minimum one week) from Kenya Institute of Highway and Building Technology (KIHBT) or a recognized institution.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate from St. John Ambulance, KIHBT, or any other recognized institution.
  • Valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience at the grade of Driver III or a comparable position.
  • Demonstrated merit, reliability, and excellent driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in government or public service fleet management environments.
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and handle confidential assignments responsibly.
  • High standards of integrity, discipline, and time management.
