Senior Dealer, Foreign Exchange Job Description

The Senior Dealer, Foreign Exchange is responsible for executing and supporting domestic FX market operations in line with the Bank’s monetary policy and price stability objectives. The role involves real-time monitoring of the foreign exchange market, execution of FX transactions and interventions, dissemination of official exchange rates, market surveillance, data analysis, and related operational and administrative functions.

This position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to operate effectively in fast-paced market environments while ensuring compliance with prudential guidelines and internal control frameworks.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the effective performance of the Domestic Foreign Exchange Operations Section and the broader Monetary Operations Division.
  • Support the achievement of the Bank’s strategic objectives related to exchange rate stability, market confidence, and orderly FX market functioning.
  • Work collaboratively within the team to deliver assigned Key Result Areas (KRAs) and demonstrate the required professional and behavioural competencies.

Technical and Operational Responsibilities

  • Prepare, validate, and circulate official foreign exchange rates to internal Bank systems and publish approved rates on the CBK website.
  • Conduct foreign exchange auctions for forex bureaus in collaboration with the Banking Department.
  • Execute foreign exchange market interventions on approved trading platforms in support of exchange rate and price stability objectives.
  • Monitor interbank FX trading activity in real time across approved trading platforms.
  • Compile, analyse, and report daily FX interbank transaction data, including traded volumes, exchange rates, and prevailing market trends.
  • Monitor and update the Trade-Weighted Exchange Rate (TWER) intraday using transaction data to assess market movements and volatility.
  • Conduct continuous surveillance of domestic, regional, and global FX market developments and evaluate their implications for the domestic FX market.
  • Track significant pipeline FX transactions with potential market impact and provide guidance to mitigate exchange rate risks where necessary.
  • Compile and analyse daily preliminary and actual foreign exchange exposure data submitted by commercial banks.
  • Assess compliance with prudential guidelines on Foreign Exchange Exposure Limits (CBK/PG/06) on both an intraday and end-of-day basis.
  • Prepare analytical reports on breaches of FX exposure limits and escalate findings to the Director, Financial Markets Department, and the Bank Supervision Department.
  • Assess overall FX market liquidity conditions based on exposure and transaction data.
  • Prepare and circulate daily foreign exchange market reports to Bank Management.
  • Compile and analyse monthly gain or loss reports on foreign exchange sales to commercial banks and submit them to the Finance Department.
  • Accurately capture interbank FX transactions in the Bank’s accounting systems, including T24 and other relevant platforms.
  • Prepare payment vouchers and reconcile invoices related to FX trading system vendors.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date records and filing systems for the FX Operations Office.

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend meetings with market participants, stakeholders, and internal committees as required.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by management that are consistent with the role and departmental objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, Banking, or a related field.

Work Experience

  • At least three (3) years of relevant work experience in foreign exchange operations, financial markets, treasury operations, or a related field.

Technical Competencies

  • Strong understanding of financial market instruments and foreign exchange markets.
  • Knowledge of money markets, capital markets, and derivatives.
  • Awareness of emerging issues in financial markets.
  • Sound understanding of banking laws, regulations, and central banking operations.
  • Strong stakeholder management and market engagement skills.
