Job Purpose
The Senior Principal Trainer I is responsible for designing, developing, and delivering advanced maritime training programs, coordinating curriculum development, mentoring trainers, and fostering strong links between the academy and the maritime industry. This role is ideal for professionals seeking senior maritime instructor roles, maritime education leadership positions, and training coordination jobs.
Key Responsibilities
- Initiate, formulate, and implement institutional policies and strategies.
- Design, develop, and deliver capacity building programs in management and specialized maritime areas.
- Coordinate the development of instructional materials for training programs.
- Oversee the development and review of curriculum and syllabus for all training courses.
- Coordinate practical sessions, trade projects, and business plan development.
- Participate in sector skills development initiatives and industry collaboration.
- Report on training programs, seminars, workshops, and symposia.
- Initiate and coordinate research and consultancy assignments.
- Conduct capacity building surveys and needs assessments.
- Supervise and mentor trainers and junior instructors.
- Design staff development programs in areas of specialization.
- Evaluate and review training programs to ensure alignment with industry standards.
- Provide liaison between the academy and maritime industry stakeholders.
- Coordinate the implementation of training programs according to set syllabi.
- Oversee the setting, administration, and marking of examinations.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum fifteen (15) years cumulative relevant work experience, including at least three (3) years as Senior Principal Trainer II (MET) or a comparable role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science, Mechanical, Electrical, or Marine Engineering.
- Master’s degree in Nautical Science, Mechanical, Electrical, or Marine Engineering.
- STCW 78-compliant qualifications, e.g., Certificate of Competence (CoC) 2nd Engineer (III/2) or Chief Mate (II/2).
- Competence-Based Assessment from a recognized institution.
- Pedagogical skills training certificate from a recognized institution.
- Leadership course of at least four (4) weeks (added advantage).
- Membership in a relevant professional body.
- Proficiency in computer applications and digital tools.
- Compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
