The British High Commission (BHC) in Nairobi is seeking a talented and experienced Social Development Advisor to join their dynamic team. This critical role offers an exciting opportunity to shape development policy and make a meaningful impact on poverty reduction and social inclusion in Kenya.
About the Role:
The Social Development Advisor will be a key member of the Humanitarian, Resilience and Inclusion (HRI) Team within the larger Human and Social Development (HSD) Team at BHC Nairobi. This position is at the forefront of efforts to address the needs of Kenya’s most vulnerable populations and build resilience through innovative approaches.
Key Responsibilities:
- – Lead research and analysis on Kenya’s demographics, social dynamics, and political economy to inform BHC Nairobi’s policy and programme portfolio
- – Provide expert social development advice across BHC Nairobi’s development initiatives
- – Ensure UK commitments to tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG), human rights, and disability issues are integrated into HMG’s work in Kenya
- – Spearhead implementation of the Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) Strategy
- – Collaborate with Kenyan government partners and stakeholders to promote inclusive development and accountability
- – Support cross-cutting policy work, including VIP briefings and parliamentary questions
- – Contribute professional expertise to the wider Social Development Advisor network
Requirements:
- – Bachelor’s degree in Social/Political Analysis, Development Studies, Gender Studies, or related field (Master’s degree preferred)
- – Minimum 5 years of relevant work experience in international development or social policy
- – Strong understanding of social protection systems and poverty reduction strategies
- – Proven ability to conduct social, political, and vulnerability analyses
- – Experience in promoting gender equality and social inclusion across diverse sectors
- – Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
- – Ability to work effectively in cross-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams
Desired Skills:
- – Programme management experience
- – Familiarity with UK government systems and processes
- – Knowledge of East African development context
