About the Role

The Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing U.S. Government vehicles used by the Motor Pool and other U.S. Government agencies at post. The position helps maintain the safety, reliability and operational readiness of the vehicle fleet through preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs and accurate vehicle records.

The role also supports the maintenance of the armored vehicle fleet and DriveCam equipment installed on mission vehicles. Where complex repairs require external support, the mechanic recommends appropriate outsourcing and checks that contracted work meets required specifications and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform preventative and scheduled maintenance on U.S. Government vehicles in a timely manner.
• Carry out oil changes, brake and suspension repairs, minor electrical work and other routine vehicle servicing.
• Perform tire rotations, tire changes and wheel balancing to maintain vehicle safety and reliability.
• Service armored vehicles in accordance with the Annual Armored Vehicle Maintenance Guidance.
• Inspect vehicles to identify servicing, repair, parts replacement and safety requirements.
• Install, remove and maintain DriveCam event recording devices, brackets and GPS equipment on mission vehicles.
• Troubleshoot DriveCam components and related circuits to prevent faults and unnecessary battery drain.
• Recommend repair work that should be outsourced and inspect outsourced repairs during and after completion.
• Maintain individual vehicle files and enter relevant information into electronic systems, including ILMS.
• Monitor vehicle parts requirements and provide feedback to support timely servicing and adequate stock levels.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of secondary school is required.
• Completion of at least 3 years of Automotive Technical Training or apprenticeship.
• Automotive Technician Craft 3 certificate or an equivalent qualification is required.
• At least 5 years of continuous hands-on experience working as a vehicle mechanic in a recognized institution.
• Good working knowledge of English and Kiswahili, including speaking, reading and writing.
• Good knowledge of automotive vehicle operations and safety.
• Ability to interpret shop manuals, parts catalogues, diagrams and technical automotive terminology.
• Knowledge of Kenyan Traffic Laws and traffic patterns, as well as vehicle maintenance labour and parts costs.
• Strong mechanical and electrical knowledge with sound judgement when assessing vehicle servicing requirements.
• Ability to troubleshoot vehicle malfunctions using diagnostic tools and software.
• Good customer service, communication and teamwork skills.
• A valid local Class BCE driving licence.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance or security certificate, subject to the required background investigation.
