About the Role
The Company Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting financial reporting and ensuring compliance with applicable accounting and tax requirements. The position will work with the Financial Controller, Heads of Department and other teams on budgeting, forecasting, financial controls, risk management and audit coordination.
The role will also oversee receivables activities in collaboration with the Receivables Officer and contribute to improving finance processes, systems and resource utilization.
Key Responsibilities
Cash Management
- Maintain accurate and organized records of incoming and outgoing cash transactions.
- Process and record cash receipts, including customer payments, and ensure accurate account allocation.
- Ensure exchange gains and losses are approved before posting.
- Implement collection strategies to minimize overdue accounts.
- Issue petty cash after verifying and reconciling expenses and post petty cash vouchers promptly.
- Support cash flow planning and forecasting and reconcile accounts receivable ledgers with general ledger accounts.
- Assist with monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports and file cash records in Edocs and CW1.
Financial Reporting, Budgeting and Cost Control
- Prepare accurate annual financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements.
- Conduct financial analysis to identify trends, variances and opportunities for improvement.
- Prepare and monitor budgets in collaboration with other departments.
- Analyse budget variances and provide corrective action recommendations.
- Prepare budget utilization and contribution analysis reports to support departmental performance monitoring.
- Allocate and post overhead expenses accurately on the CW1 system and reconcile related general ledger accounts monthly.
- Review overhead cost trends and prepare financial reports requested by management.
Controls, Tax and Audit
- Work with the Financial Controller and Heads of Department to identify financial risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Develop and implement policies and procedures with emphasis on internal controls.
- Ensure compliance with applicable tax regulations and timely submission of PAYE, VAT and withholding tax returns.
- Support statutory reporting and provide analysis on proposed changes to accounting rules, policies, legislation and government requirements.
- Coordinate the annual organizational audit with the Financial Controller and relevant teams.
Systems and Process Improvement
- Oversee the development and implementation of procedures and system features that improve finance department workflow.
- Monitor departmental work and identify opportunities to improve procedures and resource utilization while maintaining accuracy.
- Ensure the integrity and reliability of financial data.
- Participate in system improvement initiatives and oversee the receivables section in collaboration with the Receivables Officer.
- Coach and mentor staff on handling non-routine reporting transactions.
- Undertake other responsibilities delegated by management.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- Minimum of 8 years of working experience.
- CPA (K) certification.
- Proficiency in computer skills.
- Strong knowledge of cash management, financial reporting, budgeting, tax compliance and internal controls.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and relationship management skills.
- Excellent organizational and planning abilities.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize different tasks effectively.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a pressured environment.
- Strong attention to detail, confidentiality, problem-solving skills, integrity and work ethics.
Preferred Qualification
- Knowledge of the CargoWise system is an added advantage.
