Job Description
The Manager – Geothermal Resource Management will lead the exploration, development, modelling, and long-term stewardship of geothermal reservoirs. The role ensures that steam resources are sustainably managed and reliably supplied to power producers. This is a senior leadership position critical to GDC’s operations, offering one of the most impactful senior geothermal engineer roles within Kenya’s energy landscape.
This role requires strong scientific expertise, strategic leadership, and advanced understanding of geothermal systems. The officer will oversee geothermal surface exploration, reservoir modelling, well siting, drilling supervision, steam field management, and geoscientific assessments needed to maintain sustainable steam production. The position requires managing multidisciplinary teams, guiding policy development, overseeing departmental budgets, and ensuring technical excellence across all geothermal resource management activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing leadership in developing and implementing geothermal resource strategies, departmental workplans, and budgets.
- Developing and enforcing policies and procedures that support effective reservoir and steam field management in line with GDC’s strategic goals.
- Managing staff, scientific operations, technical resources, and departmental performance.
- Coordinating surface geoscientific exploration, heat flow measurements, and geothermal field assessments.
- Identifying, ranking, and prioritizing geothermal prospects.
- Leading well siting, well targeting, and overseeing drilling processes.
- Managing steam gathering systems and ensuring high-quality steam delivery to power plants.
- Overseeing reservoir performance monitoring, well testing, reinjection strategies, and steam field optimization.
- Approving geothermal resource models, assessments, feasibility studies, and technical recommendations.
- Managing construction contracts for steam piping, fluid collection systems, reinjection networks, and related infrastructure.
- Overseeing design, fabrication, and maintenance of geothermal management equipment.
- Ensuring accurate metering, auditing, and efficient steam utilization.
- Reviewing and recommending research into geothermal testing procedures, modelling advancements, and innovations.
- Building internal technical capacity through structured training and professional development.
- Facilitating consultancy services and scientific innovations in collaboration with relevant technical departments.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of twelve (12) years relevant experience, with at least four (4) years in a supervisory role.
- Master’s degree in Earth/Geological Science, Geology, Geochemistry, Geothermal Technology, or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Earth/Geological Science, Geology, Chemistry, Geochemistry, Physics, or related field.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology.
- Management course of at least four (4) cumulative weeks.
- Membership with Geothermal Association of Kenya (GAK) or other relevant bodies.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced reservoir modelling and geothermal field management experience.
- Proven experience in geothermal drilling environments.
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary geoscience and engineering teams.
- Strong familiarity with geothermal system design, fluid collection, and reinjection operations.
