Programme Description
The AKUH Medical Internship Programme covers rotations in the following core disciplines:

In addition to these primary rotations, interns receive exposure to Family Medicine, Pathology, Anaesthesiology, and Emergency Medicine. Aims and Objectives
The primary aim of the programme is to develop highly skilled, competent, and ethically grounded medical officers. By the end of the training, interns will be able to:
- Function effectively as competent and caring physicians.
- Assess and manage common medical and surgical conditions.
- Manage medical emergencies and participate in resuscitations.
- Initiate appropriate management plans and refer patients when necessary.

- Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and healthcare teams.

- Acquire knowledge of commonly used drugs and their rational use.

Eligibility Criteria
- Completion of an undergraduate medical degree from a recognised medical school in Kenya.
- Medical graduates from East African Community (EAC) countries with reciprocal recognition are eligible.
- International graduates must meet minimum Kenyan university requirements and pass the KMPDB internship qualifying examinations.
- Evidence of signing the Hippocratic Oath.
- Successful completion of the Internship Assessment Exam and interviews set by AKUH.
Evaluation and Governance
The programme is governed by the PGME Director and the Internship Coordinator, with day-to-day administration managed by the Internship Coordinator. Specialty Programme Directors oversee training, patient care, and intern supervision within their departments. Interns are evaluated at the end of every three-month rotation, with procedure and skills logbooks tracking progress. Completion of the programme is certified to the KMPDB upon satisfactory performance across all rotations.
