Principal Accountant Job Description

The Principal Accountant will manage, analyze, record, and report financial information to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations. This role sits within the Accounts & Finance team and provides critical insights that support strategic decision-making and institutional accountability.

This position involves overseeing internal financial controls, preparing comprehensive financial reports, and advising management on resource allocation. Candidates will engage in high-level accounting processes that directly influence the operational effectiveness of AHB.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement accounting policies, strategies, and frameworks in line with organizational standards.
• Develop and maintain an effective system of internal controls adhering to financial regulations.
• Reconcile creditors’ ledger, general ledger, and cashbook accounts accurately and timely.
• Ensure proper posting of all revenue receipts and financial transactions according to laid-down procedures.
• Coordinate the preparation of payment vouchers, cheque books, and cashbook records.
• Initiate and monitor domestic and foreign borrowing in accordance with existing laws.
• Engage potential financing partners and coordinate strategic financial forums.
• Prepare periodic reports on resource mobilization and departmental performance.
• Ensure all payments and receipts comply with government circulars and accounting regulations.
• Respond to audit queries and prepare monthly tax returns to ensure statutory compliance.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of nine (9) years’ cumulative relevant work experience, including three (3) years at Senior Accountant level or equivalent.
• Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (Accounting or Finance), Business Administration (Accounting option), or equivalent.
• CPA (K) or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
• Membership in ICPAK or a recognized professional accounting body, in good standing.
• Completion of a management course lasting at least four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
• Proficiency in accounting software and computer applications relevant to finance roles in Nairobi.
• Strong analytical, report writing, and supervisory skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with public sector accounting and financial compliance.
• Familiarity with institutional housing finance operations.
• Advanced knowledge of budgeting, auditing, and tax management.
