Principal Accountant Job Description
The Principal Accountant will manage, analyze, record, and report financial information to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulations. This role sits within the Accounts & Finance team and provides critical insights that support strategic decision-making and institutional accountability.
This position involves overseeing internal financial controls, preparing comprehensive financial reports, and advising management on resource allocation. Candidates will engage in high-level accounting processes that directly influence the operational effectiveness of AHB.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement accounting policies, strategies, and frameworks in line with organizational standards.
- Develop and maintain an effective system of internal controls adhering to financial regulations.
- Reconcile creditors’ ledger, general ledger, and cashbook accounts accurately and timely.
- Ensure proper posting of all revenue receipts and financial transactions according to laid-down procedures.
- Coordinate the preparation of payment vouchers, cheque books, and cashbook records.
- Initiate and monitor domestic and foreign borrowing in accordance with existing laws.
- Engage potential financing partners and coordinate strategic financial forums.
- Prepare periodic reports on resource mobilization and departmental performance.
- Ensure all payments and receipts comply with government circulars and accounting regulations.
- Respond to audit queries and prepare monthly tax returns to ensure statutory compliance.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of nine (9) years’ cumulative relevant work experience, including three (3) years at Senior Accountant level or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (Accounting or Finance), Business Administration (Accounting option), or equivalent.
- CPA (K) or equivalent professional accounting qualification.
- Membership in ICPAK or a recognized professional accounting body, in good standing.
- Completion of a management course lasting at least four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
- Proficiency in accounting software and computer applications relevant to finance roles in Nairobi.
- Strong analytical, report writing, and supervisory skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with public sector accounting and financial compliance.
- Familiarity with institutional housing finance operations.
- Advanced knowledge of budgeting, auditing, and tax management.
