Job Description
The School Bursar will be a key member of the administrative team and will be responsible for overseeing the financial health of the institution. This role involves end-to-end financial planning, monitoring, and reporting, ensuring that all financial operations adhere to both school policies and regulatory standards. This opportunity is ideal for finance professionals with experience in school environments, as well as those transitioning from roles such as accountants, administrative officers, or financial controllers in Kenya’s education sector.
The ideal candidate should be proactive, detail-oriented, and have a strong sense of ethics. The bursar will work closely with the principal, school board, and administrative departments to support strategic decision-making through financial insights and performance tracking.
Key Responsibilities
- Developing, implementing, and managing the annual budget in alignment with the school’s strategic plan.
- Maintaining accurate and timely financial records, ledgers, and documentation for internal and external reporting.
- Monitoring fee payments, issuing invoices, and handling payment-related inquiries from parents or guardians.
- Ensuring compliance with all government and institutional financial regulations, including audits and tax filings.
- Collaborating with school leadership to develop cost-effective strategies and financial forecasts.
- Overseeing procurement and managing school expenditure to ensure financial efficiency.
- Supporting school events and fundraising efforts from a financial planning and tracking perspective.
- Providing financial reports and recommendations to the school board and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in financial management, accounting, or school administration roles.
- Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, or similar tools.
- Strong skills in budgeting, financial planning, and data analysis.
- Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—with strong interpersonal abilities.
- High ethical standards, integrity, and attention to detail.
- In-depth knowledge of financial compliance requirements in Kenya’s education sector.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or professional certification in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Prior experience working as a bursar or accountant in a school environment.
- Understanding of school management systems and financial policy frameworks.
- Experience working with NGOs or community-based institutions will be an added advantage.
