Senior Manager, Foreign Exchange Operations Job Description

The Senior Manager, Foreign Exchange Operations will lead the FX Operations Section, ensuring efficient and effective management of domestic foreign exchange activities. The role requires strategic oversight, operational expertise, and strong leadership skills to maintain exchange rate stability, support the Bank’s monetary policy objectives, and manage risk in alignment with CBK regulations and international best practices.

This position is critical in advising the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and senior management on market developments, designing FX strategies, implementing operational plans, and coordinating cross-functional activities to achieve department objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the overall performance of the Financial Markets Department and the Bank’s strategic objectives.
  • Work effectively with senior management and other departments to deliver on Key Result Areas (KRAs).
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for foreign exchange operations that align with the Bank’s monetary and economic policy objectives.

Technical and Operational Responsibilities

  • Lead the Front Office function and oversee domestic foreign exchange operations.
  • Continuously review and enhance Front Office processes to optimize efficiency, mitigate risk, and deliver value.
  • Ensure staff receive regular training on FX operations, risk management, and adherence to operational guidelines.
  • Develop FX strategies, operational plans, and budgets, ensuring alignment with CBK’s policy objectives.
  • Recommend monetary policy tools, including FX purchases and sales, to support price stability.
  • Monitor domestic and global FX market developments and provide timely briefings to MPC and senior management.
  • Oversee preparation and dissemination of official foreign exchange rates.
  • Manage FX reserve levels through domestic market interventions to achieve targeted reserve positions.
  • Conduct market surveillance, monitor liquidity, and assess potential risks in FX markets.
  • Develop and maintain the Section’s Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and operational documentation.
  • Mentor, coach, and support staff to achieve high productivity, succession planning, and career development objectives.
  • Ensure adherence to Bank policies, regulations, and international best practices in FX management.
  • Prepare periodic and ad hoc reports on Section activities and coordinate cross-department initiatives.

Other Responsibilities

  • Support other departmental initiatives as assigned by senior management.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to promote effective foreign exchange operations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, Economics, Banking, or a related field from a recognized university.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant field is an added advantage.
  • Professional qualifications in finance, accounting, or related disciplines are desirable.

Work Experience

  • At least ten (10) years of relevant experience in financial markets or foreign exchange operations, including a minimum of five (5) years in a managerial role.

Technical Competencies

  • Expertise in treasury and foreign exchange management.
  • Knowledge of money, capital markets, derivatives, interest rates, and pricing methodologies.
  • Understanding of national, regional, and international statutory trading requirements.
  • Competence in financial analysis, market monitoring, and risk management.
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg and other financial information platforms.
  • Strong analytical skills to evaluate financial engineering, liquidity forecasting, and market trends.
