Coxswain II – Role Overview

The Coxswain II is responsible for the safe, timely, and efficient operation of harbour pilot boats, mooring boats, and tug craft. This role ensures compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, applicable international maritime conventions, and national legislation. Professionals in this role supervise harbour craft crews, coordinate vessel movements, and support safe port operations while preventing marine delays and accidents.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate harbour pilot and mooring boats safely, ensuring smooth berthing and shifting of vessels.
  • Supervise mooring gang to prevent marine delays and ensure safety compliance in line with ISM Code.
  • Coordinate communication between mooring gang and vessel pilots to ensure safe operations.
  • Ensure compliance with staff regulations, Harbour Regulations 1970, and official circulars and notices.
  • Oversee the timely execution of vessel shifting, hauling, and berthing operations.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and report incidents in accordance with port policies.

Required Qualifications

  • KCSE certificate or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as Sailor I or in a relevant maritime field.
  • STCW 95 mandatory certificates and valid Coxswain certificate.
  • Strong understanding of maritime operations, harbour craft handling, and safety management procedures.
  • Compliance with Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya regarding ethics and integrity.
  • Professional competence in supervising crew and coordinating vessel operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in harbour pilot boat, mooring boat, or tug operations within a busy port environment.
  • Knowledge of maintenance schedules and safety procedures for marine vessels.
  • Ability to train and mentor junior crew members on operational and safety protocols.
  • Familiarity with harbour regulations, ISM Code standards, and national maritime legislation.
