Carpenter Job Description: Carpentry Jobs in Nanyuki

The Carpenter will conduct carpentry construction and refurbishment work in residential buildings, workshops, stores and outdoor areas across BATUK training locations. The role requires the safe use of manual and power tools, interpretation of blueprints and technical drawings, and completion of work orders to the required standard.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team or independently after receiving direction from the Chargehand. Carpenter vacancy in Nanyuki candidates must maintain good workmanship, follow risk assessments and comply with applicable regulations and Codes of Practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct carpentry construction and remodelling work while preparing appropriate method statements and risk assessments.
  • Use manual and power tools safely and effectively for assigned carpentry activities.
  • Set up, operate and perform basic maintenance on woodworking machines such as lathes, drill presses, sanders, shapers and planing machines.
  • Complete stain-grade trim work, hang doors, install door hardware and set windows.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and work orders to determine job requirements.
  • Apply appropriate mathematical skills when planning and completing carpentry work.
  • Erect scaffolding or safely set up ladders when performing work above ground level.
  • Maintain tools, machinery and equipment in clean, safe and serviceable condition.
  • Inspect, maintain and correctly wear task-specific PPE while following health and safety requirements.
  • Safely store issued tools and materials, return unused materials to stores and communicate progress or potential problems.

Required Qualifications: Carpenter Jobs in Kenya

  • Hold a minimum Trade Test 1 in Carpentry and Joinery or a recognised woodwork course with at least three years’ working experience.
  • Hold a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
  • Hold a minimum Grade 1 Carpentry and Joinery qualification.
  • Demonstrate practical experience performing carpentry work on new projects and refurbishments.
  • Operate a variety of motorised and hand tools and equipment safely and effectively.
  • Understand occupational hazards and apply standard safety practices and procedures.
  • Assess and mitigate risks when performing heavy manual work or working in unfavourable conditions.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions while meeting schedules and timelines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hold a valid Kenya driving licence, Class B, C1 or C.
  • Hold an Artisan and Craft Qualification.
  • Have previous carpentry work experience with DIO or BATUK.
  • Understand heavy equipment operating techniques.
  • Understand relevant UK, national and local laws, codes and regulations applicable to the work area.

Training Requirements

  • Training on the structure and function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK.
  • Inspection, assembly and safe use of scaffolding.
  • Health and Safety at Work and COSHH awareness.
  • Manual handling, fire safety and first aid.
  • Equipment care, including correct use and maintenance.
  • Confined Spaces, Working at Height and Asbestos training.
