Generator Mechanic Job Description
The Generator Mechanic will inspect, maintain, service and repair standby and operational generators and other non-vehicle-mounted mechanical plant. The role also covers compressor plant, ventilation plant, roller shutter doors and lifting equipment.
Generator Mechanic vacancy in Nanyuki candidates must be able to diagnose faults, order replacement parts, maintain equipment logbooks and make safe faulty equipment. The successful candidate will work in accordance with JSP 375, Volume 3, applicable safety procedures and relevant technical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Organise and conduct routine inspection, maintenance, servicing and repair of standby and operational generators.
- Maintain generators and mechanical plant to ensure equipment remains operational and reliable.
- Inspect, service and repair compressors, ventilation plant, roller shutter doors and lifting equipment.
- Diagnose equipment faults, order required spares and complete mechanical plant logbooks.
- Identify problems, evaluate solutions and make timely decisions within the limits of assigned authority.
- Identify, isolate and make safe faulty or dangerous installations and equipment using approved procedures.
- Apply Safe Systems of Work under JSP 375, Volume 3 and act as Person in Charge for Petroleum and Mechanical Systems when required.
- Maintain knowledge of the Petroleum and Mechanical Systems Safety Rule Book and relevant confined-space requirements.
- Supervise labourers and junior tradesmen, monitor progress and provide constructive guidance.
- Respond to emergencies, communicate required repairs, direct repair activities and assist with transporting materials and equipment.
Required Qualifications: Generator Mechanic Jobs in Kenya
- Hold a minimum Trade Test 1 in Electrical with at least three years’ experience in generator repairs, troubleshooting, servicing and general maintenance.
- Hold a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
- Understand installation and maintenance methods for engines, compressors, generators and related mechanical equipment.
- Understand maintenance, inspection and emergency repair programmes.
- Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and resolve non-routine maintenance and repair problems.
- Operate motorised and hand tools and equipment used within the assigned work area.
- Understand occupational hazards, standard safety practices and heavy equipment operating techniques.
- Understand relevant organisational policies, responsibilities, operations and objectives.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hold a valid Kenya driving licence, Class B, C or C1.
- Have competence in generator electronic control module programming, particularly FG Wilson PowerWizard, Deepsea or Easygen software.
- Prepare and present technical reports following equipment failures and remediation activities.
- Understand relevant UK, national and local laws, codes, regulations and BATUK standing orders.
- Understand supervision and employee development principles and practices.
Training and Work Requirements
- Training on the structure and function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK.
- Health and Safety at Work, COSHH awareness and manual handling.
- First aid and fire awareness training.
- Equipment care, including correct use and maintenance.
- MOD Safety Rules and Procedures, particularly JSP 375, Volume 3.
- BS 7671, IET Wiring Regulations and Amendment 3.
- Working at Height, Confined Spaces, Petroleum, Mechanical Systems and Asbestos training.
