Painter Job Description

The Painter will perform a variety of painting and finishing tasks across BATUK facilities and training areas. Painter vacancy in Nanyuki candidates will receive daily assignments or work orders and complete tasks to the required standard with appropriate guidance.

The role involves preparing surfaces, applying different finishes, completing signwriting work and maintaining tools and materials. The successful candidate must understand relevant regulations, workplace hazards and safe painting practices while delivering their own results and supporting team performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Paint interior and exterior surfaces using varnishes, paints, wall fabrics, stains and sealers.
  • Mix and match paint, stain and other finishes according to job specifications.
  • Complete signwriting using stencils, graphics and hand-painted lettering.
  • Prepare surfaces by washing, filling holes and cracks with putty, and sanding surfaces to achieve smooth finishes.
  • Read work orders and follow instructions provided by the Chain of Command.
  • Maintain painting equipment in clean, safe and serviceable condition.
  • Inspect, maintain and correctly wear task-specific personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain a tidy workshop and work area, particularly at the end of each working day.
  • Safely store and protect tools and materials issued for assigned tasks.
  • Monitor work progress, communicate potential problems and contribute to team results.

Required Qualifications: Painting Jobs in Kenya

  • Hold a Government Trade Certificate I in Painter/Signwriter.
  • Hold a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
  • Have served as a Painter for a minimum of two years.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience in industrial, domestic and commercial painting.
  • Understand occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
  • Understand relevant regulations and applicable Codes of Practice.
  • Demonstrate planning skills, including setting realistic targets and working to agreed requirements.
  • Work independently and perform duties with minimum supervision while adapting to changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hold a valid Kenya driving licence, Class B, C1 or C.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions effectively.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with personnel.
  • Understand organisational policies, functions, responsibilities and operational objectives.
  • Have knowledge of supervision and employee development principles and practices.

Training and Work Requirements

  • Training on the structure and function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK.
  • Equipment care, including correct use and maintenance.
  • Health and Safety at Work and COSHH awareness.
  • Manual handling, first aid and fire safety training.
  • Working at height, confined spaces, Legionella and asbestos training.
  • Training in the erection and safe utilisation of scaffolding.
