Senior Legal Officer

MOGO Auto Limited is seeking an experienced Senior Legal Officer to join its legal team in Kenya. The role provides strategic legal support across corporate governance, litigation, contracts, regulatory compliance, recoveries, and day-to-day legal advisory while providing oversight and mentorship to junior legal staff.

What You Will Do

• Provide strategic legal advice to management and business units on corporate governance, commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, disputes, litigation, and other legal matters.
• Lead, manage, and coordinate litigation and dispute resolution matters, including legal strategy, preparation and review of documentation, court representation where necessary, and oversight of external counsel.
• Monitor ongoing litigation and provide management with updates on case status, legal risks, and potential outcomes.
• Oversee the handling and resolution of legal complaints and disputes while supporting timely resolution and effective legal risk management.
• Manage day-to-day in-house legal operations, including drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and approving agreements, MOUs, leases, service contracts, financing documents, and other business documentation.
• Ensure compliance with regulatory obligations, including licensing, reporting, and engagement with financial services, consumer protection, and data privacy regulators.
• Develop, review, and implement legal policies, procedures, and compliance frameworks in line with applicable laws, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
• Provide legal oversight of recoveries and enforcement activities while working with collections, credit risk, and operations teams to support lawful and effective recovery actions.
• Conduct legal research and monitor changes in legislation, regulations, and judicial precedents affecting the company’s operations and target markets.
• Work with internal departments to ensure contracts, transactions, and business initiatives align with company objectives while identifying and mitigating legal and regulatory risks.
• Lead legal training and awareness sessions for management and employees on relevant legal, regulatory, and compliance matters.
• Oversee the contract management system, ensuring agreements are properly executed, stored, monitored, and renewed on time.
• Support corporate secretarial functions, including board and committee resolutions, agendas, minutes, and statutory filings where required.
• Mentor, supervise, and provide guidance to junior legal staff while promoting high standards of legal work, knowledge transfer, and professional development.
• Perform other legal, compliance, or risk-related duties assigned by management.

What You Will Need

Education and Professional Qualifications

• Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized institution.
• Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
• Admission to the Roll of Advocates in Kenya.
• Current practicing certificate.

Experience

• Minimum of 5 years of proven post-admission experience as a legal professional.
• Experience managing junior legal officers.
• Experience working in-house, with financial institutions, particularly within the microfinance sector, or with regulators is highly preferred.

Competencies

• Strong understanding of the Kenyan regulatory framework, including CBK guidelines, microfinance institution regulations, data privacy, and consumer protection laws.
• Excellent legal drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
• Experience in dispute resolution.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and translate them into practical solutions.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and legal research tools.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to think critically and strategically.
