Bandari Maritime Academy was established through Legal Notice No. 233 of 28th November 2018, with the mandate to develop academic and vocational skills and provide competent maritime human resources for a sustainable Blue Economy.
About the Role
The Senior Principal Trainer I (Marine Engineering) will coordinate and support training programmes while contributing to curriculum development, practical sessions, research, capacity building and assessment activities. The position also involves supervising trainers, engaging with industry and coordinating the delivery of training programmes in line with established syllabi.
Key Responsibilities
- Initiate, formulate and implement institutional policies and strategies.
- Design, develop and deliver capacity-building programmes in management and related areas.
- Coordinate the development of instructional materials for training.
- Coordinate the development and review of curricula and syllabi.
- Coordinate practical sessions, trade projects and business plan development.
- Participate in sector skills and development.
- Coordinate and report on training programmes, seminars, workshops and symposia.
- Initiate and coordinate research and consultancy assignments.
- Conduct capacity-building surveys.
- Supervise and mentor trainers.
- Design staff development programmes in areas of specialization.
- Evaluate and review training programmes.
- Provide liaison between the Academy and industry.
- Coordinate implementation of training programmes according to the set syllabus.
- Coordinate the setting, administration and marking of examinations.
Required Qualifications
- A cumulative service period of fifteen (15) years of relevant work experience, three of which must have been at the grade of Senior Principal Trainer II (MET) or in a comparable position.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Marine Engineering.
- A Master’s degree in Nautical Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Marine Engineering.
- Qualifications in accordance with STCW 1978 as amended, including a Certificate of Competence (CoC) as Second Engineer (III/2) or Chief Mate (II/2).
- Approval by the Kenya Maritime Authority is an added advantage.
- A Competence-Based Assessment qualification from a recognized institution.
- A Pedagogical Skills Training Certificate from a recognized institution.
- A Leadership Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks is an added advantage.
- Membership of a relevant professional body.
- Proficiency in computer applications skills.
- Fulfil the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.
Benefits and Compensation
The Senior Principal Trainer I (Marine Engineering) position is offered on permanent and pensionable terms. The position carries a basic salary scale of Kshs. 165,700 – Kshs. 315,000 per month, together with a house allowance of Kshs. 35,000, commuter allowance of Kshs. 20,000 and leave allowance of Kshs. 10,000.
