About Bandari Maritime Academy

Bandari Maritime Academy was established through Legal Notice No. 233 of 28th November 2018, with the mandate to develop academic and vocational skills and provide competent maritime human resources for a sustainable Blue Economy.

About the Role

The Senior Principal Trainer I (STCW) will support the Academy’s Maritime Education and Training function by developing and delivering training programmes in accordance with STCW requirements. The role also involves coordinating curriculum development, practical training, examinations and assessments, while supporting trainer development and performance management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Initiate, formulate and implement institutional policies and strategies related to Maritime Education and Training.
  • Design, develop and deliver capacity-building and training programmes in accordance with STCW requirements.
  • Coordinate the development of instructional materials for training.
  • Coordinate the development and review of curricula and syllabi.
  • Coordinate practical sessions, trade projects and business plan development.
  • Supervise and mentor trainers and trainees.
  • Coordinate the setting, administration and marking of examinations and assessments.
  • Provide advisory services on training standards and compliance with STCW and related conventions.
  • Design staff development programmes in areas of specialization.
  • Provide liaison between the Academy and clients and industry stakeholders.
  • Prepare operational and training reports for the school or division.
  • Appraise staff and coordinate performance management within the Division.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • A Master’s degree in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from a recognized university.
  • Qualifications in accordance with STCW 1978 as amended, including a valid Certificate of Competency.
  • A valid Second Engineer (III/2) or Chief Mate (II/2) Certificate of Competency.
  • Approval by the Kenya Maritime Authority is an added advantage.
  • A cumulative service period of fifteen (15) years of relevant work experience, three (3) of which must have been at the grade of Senior Principal Trainer II (MET) or in a comparable position.
  • A Competence-Based Assessment Certificate from a recognized institution.
  • A Pedagogical Skills Training Certificate from a recognized institution.
  • A Leadership Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks is an added advantage.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Fulfil the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010.

Benefits and Compensation

The Senior Principal Trainer I (STCW) position is offered on permanent and pensionable terms. The position carries a basic salary scale of Kshs. 165,700 – Kshs. 315,000 per month, together with a house allowance of Kshs. 35,000, commuter allowance of Kshs. 20,000 and leave allowance of Kshs. 10,000.
