About the Role
The Fund Accountant will be responsible for maintaining the financial integrity of pension scheme funds by ensuring that transactions and accounting records are accurate, complete and properly reconciled. The role works closely with Pension Administration, Investments, Finance and other stakeholders to support reliable financial information and service delivery to trustees, members and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate accounting records for pension schemes, including contributions, benefits, transfers, investments, income and expenses.
- Process and account for scheme contributions, benefit payments, transfers and investment transactions.
- Prepare scheme-level journals, accounting adjustments, trial balances and unaudited quarterly management accounts.
- Monitor scheme assets, liabilities, income and expenditure and investigate unusual or unexplained movements.
- Validate contribution schedules, receipts, benefit instructions and other financial transactions.
- Reconcile member, administration, accounting and bank records and support the resolution of discrepancies.
- Prepare periodic scheme financial reports, schedules, working papers and information on material scheme transactions.
- Analyse financial movements and variances and provide explanations for significant changes.
- Perform bank, contribution, benefit, transfer and investment reconciliations and resolve suspense balances and unallocated items.
- Ensure journals, adjustments and transactions are properly supported, reviewed and authorized.
- Support the preparation of scheme financial statements, trustee reports, management information and regulatory submissions.
- Support internal and external audits by providing accurate schedules, records and responses to audit queries.
- Identify control weaknesses and financial, operational and regulatory risks and support corrective actions.
- Identify opportunities to automate and improve fund accounting, reconciliation and reporting processes.
- Participate in system enhancements, user acceptance testing and implementation of fund accounting and pension administration systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Actuarial Science, Economics, Business Administration or a relevant field.
- CPA, ACCA or an equivalent professional accounting qualification.
- Knowledge of the Kenyan retirement benefits regulatory environment and Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA) requirements.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting or ERP systems.
- Membership of a relevant professional body, where applicable.
Preferred Qualifications
- Relevant qualifications or progression in pensions, investment management or retirement benefits will be an added advantage.
- Experience with pension administration or fund accounting systems will be an advantage.
