Requirements for Appointment

Candidates for this premier university leadership position must meet stringent eligibility criteria:

  • Be a full Professor and holder of an earned Doctorate degree from a recognized university or equivalent institution.
  • Have at least fifteen (15) years of continuous academic, research, and managerial experience, with five (5) years at Deputy Vice Chancellor level or equivalent senior university leadership position.
  • Demonstrate proven scholarly record through research publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals, monographs, books, and book chapters.
  • Show successful history of supervising and mentoring Masters and Doctoral students to completion.
  • Possess excellent understanding of government financial policies, strategic planning, Vision 2030, Public Finance Management, Human Resource Management, and Public Procurement processes.
  • Have thorough knowledge of structural, legislative, and regulatory frameworks for university education administration in Kenya.
  • Demonstrate strategic leadership experience in academic program formulation, administrative planning, financial management, and institutional linkage development.
  • Show proven experience in networking, fundraising, and resource mobilization for research, scholarships, and institutional development.
  • Demonstrate understanding and ability to promote technological innovations for enhanced learning and university management.
  • Possess current knowledge of global university education trends and factors shaping higher education development in Kenya and East Africa.
  • Be a registered member of relevant professional associations in good standing.
  • Have impeccable ethical standards, integrity, and accountability complying with Chapter Six of the Constitution.
  • Have completed relevant management training including governance and leadership courses.

Duties and Responsibilities

As Chief Executive Officer and academic head, the Vice Chancellor will:

  • Provide strategic leadership to position the University competitively at national, regional, and international levels.
  • Develop and recommend to Council strategies, business plans, and annual budgets with proper monitoring systems.
  • Implement Council decisions and resolutions while managing all university programs and operations.
  • Coordinate development and implementation of academic and administrative policies aligned with institutional strategic plans.
  • Promote efficiency, staff/student welfare, and enforce university statutes and regulations.
  • Ensure staff compliance with public service values, principles, and ethical standards.
  • Provide innovative leadership in academics, finance, planning, research, and partnerships.
  • Maintain cooperation with government institutions, regulatory agencies, and international higher education partners.
  • Ensure effective management structures with proper succession planning for institutional sustainability.
  • Serve as custodian of university records and achieve organizational objectives as defined by Council.

Remuneration and Benefits

This executive position offers an attractive compensation package including:

  • Basic Salary Scale: Ksh 474,920 – Ksh 629,400 per month
  • House Allowance: Ksh 80,000 per month
  • Leave Allowance: As per University provisions
  • Medical Cover: Comprehensive medical insurance
  • Other Allowances: Additional benefits as provided by University policy
  • Contract Terms: Five-year renewable contract based on performance
