Job Description

The Bus Driver will be responsible for safely transporting students and staff to and from school, field trips, and other authorized destinations. This role requires strict adherence to traffic laws, excellent time management, and strong interpersonal skills. The driver will play a key part in maintaining Durham’s high standards of care and professionalism by ensuring all passengers travel securely and comfortably each day.

As part of the school’s transport department, the successful candidate will report to the Transport Manager and work collaboratively with administrative staff, parents, and teachers to uphold safety, punctuality, and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transport students to and from school, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the journey.
  • Drive school buses safely on designated routes while following all traffic laws and school policies.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, testing brakes, tires, lights, and essential systems.
  • Assist students as they board and exit the bus, maintaining a supportive and calm atmosphere.
  • Ensure all students wear seatbelts before departure and maintain proper conduct during transit.
  • Report any incidents, mechanical issues, or schedule delays immediately to the Transport Manager.
  • Keep the bus clean inside and out — sweeping, emptying bins daily, and washing the vehicle twice weekly.
  • Transport students for field trips and special events as scheduled.
  • Maintain accurate diesel and oil logs, incident reports, and daily inspection records.
  • Follow all school safety and security protocols when entering or exiting school premises.
  • Maintain discipline on the bus, reporting any behavioral issues appropriately.
  • Act as an ambassador for Durham International School by demonstrating professionalism and courtesy at all times.

Required Qualifications

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) qualification.
  • Valid and clean bus driver’s license.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional driving experience within Nairobi.
  • Strong knowledge of Nairobi roads, traffic regulations, and safety procedures.
  • Proven record of reliability and punctuality.
  • Physical fitness to assist passengers and handle minor vehicle checks.

  • Experience working in an educational or institutional environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when interacting with students, staff, and parents.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under pressure.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to student safety.
  • Flexibility to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends as needed.
