About the Role

The General Manager will direct the Kenya Re Foundation’s policies, strategies, objectives and initiatives. The position is responsible for translating the Foundation’s corporate social investment agenda into sustainable programmes while maintaining effective stakeholder relationships and measurable impact.

The role also ensures that the Foundation operates in accordance with its Trust Deed, applicable governance and regulatory requirements, Corporation policies and the requirements applicable to a Government-Owned Entity.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement and periodically review the Foundation’s strategic plan, corporate social investment policy and grant-making framework.
  • Provide strategic direction for Foundation unit strategies while balancing long-term priorities with short-term initiatives.
  • Identify priority areas such as education, health, environment and financial inclusion and develop sustainable, high-impact programmes.
  • Prepare and present the annual Foundation strategy and budget to EXCO and the Board for approval while managing resources within approved guidelines.
  • Build and maintain strategic relationships with government agencies, development partners, NGOs, communities, donors and other stakeholders.
  • Recruit complementary partners, including those providing capital and skills, and conclude partnership agreements.
  • Represent the Foundation at public forums, programme launches, community events and promotional activities while maintaining its public visibility.
  • Oversee the design, implementation and monitoring of grant and community programmes, including impact measurement, reporting and budget performance.
  • Manage Foundation assets, resources and finances, optimize procurement processes and monitor the portfolio against quarterly targets and approved budgets.
  • Ensure compliance with the Trust Deed, applicable laws, regulations and Corporation policies, while supporting the Board of Trustees or Advisory Board with Board papers and secretarial functions.
  • Oversee risk metrics and risk appetite thresholds, proactively address compliance issues and escalate potential reputational risks.
  • Provide leadership to Foundation staff and support personnel through recruitment, development, retention, performance management, coaching and mentoring.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Commerce, Social Sciences, Development Studies, Communications or a related field from a recognised institution.
  • At least 15 years of relevant work experience, including 10 years in a senior management or supervisory position within the impact sector, development, foundation or a related field.
  • Demonstrable team leadership experience and proven engagement with a Board of Directors or Board of Trustees.
  • Proven experience designing, managing and delivering community or corporate social investment programmes, including budget management.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and leverage networks involving development agencies, government, training firms, consulting firms, universities and internal stakeholders.
  • Leadership training lasting at least four weeks from a recognised and accredited institution.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Strong strategic planning, organisation, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong analytical, report-writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate and develop teams.
  • Sound knowledge of governance, corporate social investment frameworks, financial controls, risk management and compliance principles applicable to a Government-Owned Entity.
  • Fulfilment of the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Business Administration, Strategic Management, Development Studies, Social Sciences or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution.
  • Membership of a relevant professional body for corporate social responsibility, sustainability or development practitioners, in good standing.
  • Project management certification.
  • Experience in the financial services sector.
