Requirements for Appointment

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Mining and Mineral Processing, Analytical Chemistry or Chemical Engineering from a university recognized in Kenya.
• Have professional registration with a relevant engineering body, such as the Engineers Registration Board.
• Demonstrate proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) and metallurgical software.
• Have proficiency in data analysis.

Duties and Responsibilities

Metallurgist I is the entry and training grade for this cadre. An officer at this level works under the guidance of a senior officer and supports the assessment, processing and performance of metals and related materials.

• Ensure that metal components meet engineering specifications for tensile strength, hardness and toughness.
• Investigate the root causes of metal failure, corrosion and fatigue in machinery and infrastructure.
• Monitor and improve extractive metallurgy processes, including pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy.
• Monitor and improve heat treatment procedures.
• Prepare detailed reports covering experimental results, material properties and recommendations for material selection.
• Mentor or supervise laboratory technicians and junior metallurgists.

Required Qualifications

Candidates for the Metallurgist I position must have a bachelor’s degree in Mining and Mineral Processing, Analytical Chemistry or Chemical Engineering from a university recognized in Kenya. The position also requires professional registration with a relevant engineering body, such as the Engineers Registration Board.
