Safety Officer Position Overview

Amref Flying Doctors is hiring a Safety Officer to provide technical and administrative support to their Safety Department. This crucial role will focus on improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the Safety Management System (SMS) for both the Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and Aircraft Maintenance Organization (AMO) operations. The Safety Officer will maintain close relationships with the Flight Operations Unit for AOC matters and the Maintenance Department for AMO matters while reporting directly to the Head of Safety.

Key Responsibilities of the Safety Officer

Safety Management and Documentation

  • – Manage and update all safety records and the electronic Safety Management System (eSMS)
  • – Maintain an accurate safety database ensuring all recorded information is precise and current
  • – Document all safety activities according to the SMS Manual protocols
  • – Develop and update Management of Change (MOC) processes
  • – Develop and maintain safety performance targets for organizational benchmarking

Safety Culture and Promotion

  • – Promote a strong safety culture throughout the organization
  • – Support development and implementation of Safety Promotion activities
  • – Develop and disseminate safety bulletins, newsflashes, and newsletters
  • – Develop training materials and assist in conducting safety and Emergency Response Plan (ERP) training
  • – Maintain comprehensive training records for compliance and reference

Risk Management and Incident Response

  • – Organize and coordinate safety and ERP drills and exercises
  • – Investigate and follow up on hazards and occurrences
  • – Identify potential hazards and perform operational risk assessments
  • – Report incidents and accidents to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA)
  • – Analyze safety data to identify trends and improvement opportunities

Operational Support

  • – Support planning and implementation of Safety Review Board and Internal Safety Meetings
  • – Perform gap analysis as required by the SMS program
  • – Maintain close collaboration with Flight Operations and Maintenance departments
  • – Perform all other work-related duties as assigned

Qualifications and Requirements

Experience and Education

  • – Minimum 3 years’ consecutive work experience in aviation industry safety and/or quality
  • – Technical qualification in flight operations or aircraft maintenance
  • – Completed Safety Management System (SMS) training from a recognized institution
  • – Quality Management System (QMS) training from a recognized institution (advantageous)
  • – ICT proficiency for database and system management
  • – Good working knowledge of Kenya Civil Aviation Regulations (KCARs)

Work Environment

The Safety Officer will work in a 24-hour operational environment based at the Amref Flying Doctors Hangar at Wilson Airport in Nairobi. The position requires adaptability to the round-the-clock nature of aero-medical operations and emergency response.
