About Bandari Maritime Academy
Bandari Maritime Academy was established through Legal Notice No. 233 of 28th November 2018, with the mandate to develop academic and vocational skills and provide competent maritime human resources for a sustainable Blue Economy.
About the Role
The Deputy Director Placement and Industry Linkages will coordinate initiatives that connect Bandari Maritime Academy students and graduates with employment, sea time, internship and other industry opportunities. The role also involves developing partnerships with public and private stakeholders and supporting graduate readiness for employment and entrepreneurial activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Negotiate sea time opportunities for students.
- Establish linkages with public and private stakeholders to develop and execute frameworks for graduate advancement and placement.
- Negotiate employment opportunities for BMA graduates with major international shipping companies.
- Manage and coordinate student and trainer exchange programmes.
- Support the development of graduates who are prepared for the job market and entrepreneurial activities.
- Establish and maintain databases for students and graduates.
- Establish a framework, in liaison with the Chief Executive Officer, for scholarship and sponsorship opportunities.
- Initiate the development of memorandums of understanding for student placement and internships.
- Work with the administration on the international recognition of certificates.
- Liaise with the National Employment Authority and other relevant government agencies on student placement opportunities nationally and internationally.
- Market BMA graduates to potential employers nationally, regionally and internationally.
- Ensure staff development within the Division.
- Appraise staff and coordinate performance management within the Division.
Required Qualifications
- A cumulative service period of fifteen (15) years of relevant work experience, three (3) of which must have been at the grade of Assistant Director, Placement and Industry Linkages or in a comparable position.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Maritime Logistics, Education, Development Studies, Marketing, Communication, International Relations or a relevant field.
- Qualifications in accordance with STCW 1978 as amended, such as Certificates of Competence (CoC), Chief Engineer or Master Mariner (II/2 or III/2).
- A Master’s degree in Maritime Logistics, Education, Development Studies, Marketing, Communication, International Relations or an equivalent qualification.
- STCW 1978 qualifications, including a Certificate of Competence (CoC), Chief Engineer or Master Mariner (II/2 or III/2), are an added advantage.
- Registration with a relevant professional body.
- A Leadership Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
- Proficiency in computer application skills.
Benefits and Compensation
The Deputy Director Placement and Industry Linkages position is offered on permanent and pensionable terms. The position carries a basic salary scale of Kshs. 165,700 – Kshs. 315,000 per month, together with a house allowance of Kshs. 35,000, commuter allowance of Kshs. 20,000 and leave allowance of Kshs. 10,000.
