About Bandari Maritime Academy
Bandari Maritime Academy was established through Legal Notice No. 233 of 28th November 2018. The Academy has a mandate to develop academic and vocational skills and provide competent maritime human resources for a sustainable Blue Economy.
About the Role
The Senior Coxswain will be responsible for ensuring that the vessel or craft remains seaworthy and is operated safely in accordance with applicable maritime requirements. The role covers vessel navigation, machinery and equipment operation, crew and passenger safety, statutory records, maintenance and vessel inventory.
The position also involves overseeing maintenance activities, managing records relating to repairs and expenditure, requisitioning vessel stores and ensuring compliance with anti-pollution requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the vessel or craft is maintained in seaworthy condition in accordance with SOLAS.
- Organize the safe stowage, anchorage, berthing or mooring of the vessel.
- Navigate the craft safely within the prescribed area in accordance with COLREG.
- Operate machinery and equipment onboard safely in accordance with SOLAS.
- Ensure statutory vessel documents and records are kept updated.
- Ensure timely maintenance of the craft’s life-saving equipment.
- Ensure the safety of crew, passengers and the craft.
- Maintain vessel log books.
- Supervise the maintenance and servicing of boat navigation equipment.
- Oversee the maintenance and servicing of the boat’s propulsion machinery.
- Maintain and update records of maintenance and repair work.
- Requisition bunkers, oils and other vessel stores.
- Manage records relating to expenditure on bunkers and stores.
- Ensure the vessel’s machinery and other materials inventory is updated.
- Observe and adhere to the anti-pollution policy in accordance with IMO Regulations and MARPOL.
Required Qualifications
- Cumulative six (6) years of relevant work experience, three (3) of which should have been at the level of Coxswain I or a comparable position.
- Six (6) years of relevant work experience, three (3) of which should have been at the level of Coxswain II or a comparable position, as stated under the lower-grade experience requirement.
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with a minimum Grade D or equivalent qualification.
- Coxswain I Certificate in accordance with the Merchant Shipping Act and its regulations.
- Basic Safety Training Course (STCW).
- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats, other than fast Rescue Boats.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
Benefits and Compensation
The Senior Coxswain position is offered on permanent and pensionable terms. The basic salary scale is Kshs. 31,000 to Kshs. 63,500 per month, with a house allowance of Kshs. 10,000, commuter allowance of Kshs. 12,000 and annual leave allowance of Kshs. 4,000.
