About Bandari Maritime Academy

Bandari Maritime Academy was established through Legal Notice No. 233 of 28th November 2018. The Academy has a mandate to develop academic and vocational skills and provide competent maritime human resources for a sustainable Blue Economy.

About the Role

The Simulator Instructor will deliver practical maritime training using approved simulator facilities and curricula. The role requires the instructor to prepare trainees for simulation exercises, monitor their performance, assess competence and provide structured feedback through debriefing sessions.

The position also involves operating available bridge and maritime simulators, maintaining training documentation, developing lesson plans and supporting curriculum reviews, audits and inspections relating to simulator-based training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver maritime simulator-based training in accordance with approved curricula.
  • Design simulator exercises and scenarios that develop trainees’ technical competence, decision-making, situational awareness, communication and teamwork.
  • Brief trainees before exercises, monitor their performance during simulations and conduct structured debriefing sessions afterwards.
  • Assess trainee competence using approved assessment tools and maintain accurate training records.
  • Provide constructive feedback to trainees based on their simulator performance.
  • Operate bridge simulators, including the main bridge, mini-bridges, liquid cargo handling and Vessel Traffic Services simulators and their respective instructor stations, where available.
  • Conduct routine pre-use checks and promptly report faults requiring technical support.
  • Develop and regularly review simulator lesson plans, exercise manuals, assessment instruments and standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure simulator training complies with quality-management requirements, occupational safety standards and applicable regulatory and institutional policies.
  • Support curriculum development, course reviews, audits, inspections and approval processes relating to simulator-based maritime training.
  • Coordinate simulator scheduling, utilisation and resource management.
  • Support the professional development of instructors in simulator-based teaching and assessment.

Required Qualifications

  • Certificate as a Simulator Instructor.
  • Diploma in any relevant field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) approval as a Trainer and Assessor would be an added advantage.
  • Experience as a Simulator Instructor would be an added advantage.

Benefits and Compensation

The Simulator Instructor position is offered on permanent and pensionable terms. The basic salary scale is Kshs. 42,500 to Kshs. 80,000 per month, with a house allowance of Kshs. 10,000, commuter allowance of Kshs. 12,000 and annual leave allowance of Kshs. 4,000.
