Deputy Director/Senior Principal Superintending Geologist

The Public Service Commission is recruiting a Deputy Director/Senior Principal Superintending Geologist to provide technical and strategic leadership in geological surveys, mineral exploration, geoscience research, geoinformation management and geohazard assessment in Kenya. The position is suited to an experienced geologist with at least 12 years of cumulative service, including three years at Chief Superintending Geologist, Geological Survey, CSG 7 level or in a comparable position.

Requirements for Appointment

• Have a cumulative service period of twelve (12) years, three (3) of which should have been in the grade of Chief Superintending Geologist, Geological Survey, CSG 7, or in a comparable and relevant position in the wider public service.
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Environmental Geology or an equivalent qualification from a university recognized in Kenya.
• Hold professional membership with the Geological Society of Kenya.
• Be registered by the Geologists Registration Board.
• Hold a Certificate in Leadership Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
• Demonstrate managerial and a high degree of professional competence in work performance.
• Demonstrate skills in management, creativity, innovation and technical problem-solving, together with integrity and the ability to articulate, interpret and implement regional mapping and research mandates.
• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of national goals, policies, objectives and programmes and the ability to relate them to the provision of reliable geological research data and geo-information, geochemistry and geophysics.

Duties and Responsibilities

Gemstone Value Addition, Regional Coordination, Mineral Deposit Modelling and Evaluation

• Formulating research and development programmes.
• Coordinating geological services.
• Providing guidance, technical advice and policy advice to the Government on matters related to geology and strategic mineral resources.
• Coordinating environmental issues relating to projects and programmes.
• Supervising, coordinating, reviewing and verifying programmes.

Geo-Information Management

• Coordinating the development, implementation and review of policies, strategies, standards and guidelines on geological survey and research.
• Coordinating the interpretation of advanced geological and remote sensing data.
• Coordinating the implementation of geological and structural mapping programmes to define the character and distribution of rocks and superficial deposits.
• Developing and managing the National Geosciences Repository and Database.
• Ensuring maintenance of laboratories, drill core repository, rock museum, resource centre and records facilities.
• Initiating publication of technical reports and journals on the geology and mineral resources of Kenya.
• Promoting and marketing Kenya as a mineral and mining investment destination.
• Ensuring quality assurance on geological surveys and research programmes.
• Preparing and submitting periodic reports.
• Providing technical guidance and policy advisories to the Government on geological mapping, resource retrieval and dissemination.
• Collaborating with Space Agencies on the utilization of remote sensing data in geological mapping.

Exploration-Geochemistry

• Coordinating the development, implementation and review of policies, strategies, standards and guidelines on mineral exploration and evaluation.
• Fostering research and innovation in mineral exploration, mining and value addition.
• Coordinating the interpretation of advanced geochemical sampling data.
• Coordinating the implementation of geochemical programmes to define the character and geometry of mineral deposits.
• Initiating publication of technical reports and journals on the mineral resources of Kenya.
• Ensuring quality assurance on mineral exploration programmes.
• Preparing and submitting periodic reports.
• Providing technical guidance and policy advisories to the Government on mineral exploration and mineral deposits.
• Collaborating with Space Agencies on the utilization of remote sensing data in mineral exploration.
• Generating mineral resource data to spur investment in the mining sector in line with the Government development agenda.

Geo-Technical Investigation, Geological Survey and Mapping, Seismological Observation, Geo-Hazard Mapping and Management

• Coordinating the development, implementation and review of policies, strategies, standards and guidelines on Environment and Engineering Geology.
• Carrying out research and innovation in engineering geology, mining and mine safety.
• Executing interpretation of advanced geophysical, geological and remote sensing data in engineering geology and geohazards.
• Developing, managing and continuously updating a National Geo-Hazard Vulnerability Map.
• Spearheading collaboration with other countries in the Great Rift Valley system in monitoring movement and rifting systems.
• Preparing and submitting periodic reports on seismicity and land subsidence.
• Proposing technical guidance and policy advisories to the Government on geotechnical investigations, structural engineering, seismicity and general landmass movement.
• Collaborating with other earthquake monitoring networks within the region and globally.

Exploration Geophysics and Drilling

• Coordinating the development, implementation and review of policies, strategies, standards and guidelines on mineral exploration and evaluation.
• Fostering research and innovation in mineral exploration, mining and value addition.
• Coordinating the interpretation of advanced geochemical sampling data.
• Coordinating the implementation of geochemical programmes to define the character and geometry of mineral deposits.
• Initiating publication of technical reports and journals on the mineral resources of Kenya.
• Ensuring quality assurance on mineral exploration programmes.
