Duties and Responsibilities

The Gemmologist II role involves examining and analyzing minerals and gemstones, supporting resource management decisions, and carrying out gemstone processing activities. The position also covers laboratory analysis, instrument maintenance, sample handling and assessment of rough gemstones for optimal polished yield.

• Examine and identify minerals using basic, standard and advanced mineral testing equipment.
• Collect, analyze and interpret mineralogical data to support resource management and decision-making.
• Assist in grading and valuing gemstones to determine and enhance their market value.
• Safely process, pulverize and homogenize incoming ore and mineral samples for laboratory analysis.
• Perform routine quantitative analyses using XRF (X-ray Fluorescence), XRD (X-ray Diffraction) and spectrometer systems.
• Calibrate and maintain sensitive laboratory instruments to support accurate results and complete batch chain-of-custody documentation.
• Evaluate rough gemstones to estimate weight recovery and maximize polished gemstone yield.
• Perform and supervise precision gemstone processing, including sawing, pre-forming, faceting and cabochon cutting.

Required Qualifications

Candidates seeking appointment to the Gemmologist II position must have a bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Mineral Processing or Materials Engineering from a university recognized in Kenya. Proficiency in using gemological testing instruments is also required.
